Since I have spent a **** load of money on my 18RG in my 79 hilux I am wondering if a latter model steering rack with steering lock will bolt in?. I know that the head light, blinker and wiper switch wiring is different I can cut and solder that no worries .

Not sure about a 79, but I do know of a 2000 2wd power steer rack being fitted to an 84 without and major cutting and modding...
One thing to maybe consider would be a rack out of a later model ride with power steer, if you want power steer that is... we put a ford laser PS rack and column into our AC cobra kit car with no hassle, and I know of guys in our club running all sorts of different makes in their cobras and gt40's like 'honda jazz' and early 'holden barina'

not a solution, but hopefully some food for thought!! ;)
