hey whats up guys, im new to the site and i have an stockfloord 85 ext cab toyota that im building. well i ran into a problem, the truck keeps tearing up wrag joints for some reason already notched the upper control arm but it still has stress!!! i was at the junkyard looking at an 4x4 and was wondernig if i could use their steering shaft and linkage from the power steering box??? need info and or pics please!!!!!!
welcome to the site. first off im going to state on of the rules.... pics or it didnt happen...we need to see your truck before we are gonna help you. this site if full of pic whores so after that if you can take pics of the front setup when its layed out maybe we can see whats tearing up your front end, sounds like you got something out of wack cause these front ends are pretty easy to lay out even when laying rocker on big wheels. again welcome to the site.
cool might as well post up some more pics of the truck, sorry for the crappy pics all i have at the time
ahhh i see 2 problems. 1, your tie rod end adjusters look like they are hitting your bag. 2. you need to cut your steering shaft and install a universal joint in there so you can angle the shaft over the control arm... also tubeular arms would help get ya more clearance from the shaft. get the cando control arm set. problem solved and they look sexy too
i don't think that tubulars are going to fix the issue. when bodied on a big rim notching the stock arm will clear the steering. did you do the bodydrop yourself, or did you buy it like that? i'm thinking that when it was stock floored that the front clip was raised too high, which would cause the shaft to hit everything. kind of like z'ing the frame more then needed. or maybe instead of z'ing, the front was done like the minitruckin article a few years ago where the engine x-member mount is sectioned to keep from needing a z. it would need the upper mount raised the same amount, which hits the steering. in that article it says it creates problems with the steering shaft "that will be addressed later".... the problem is they never did the article on how to make the steering work lol. i'd recommend doing a universal joint as well. the problem will be finding a universal that has the correct size spline to fit the toyota box. all the ones i've found while doing my steering are for older american made cars. i think i'd take the steering box side of the rag joint mount and weld about a 3" piece of 3/4" cold rolled steel as straight as possible. then buy a weld on 3/4" universal joint, and weld it to the 3" piece of steel, and cut the stock steering column steel to fit and weld it as well. i'd buy it from here: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Sweet-Mfg-Steering-U-Joints,2031.html part # 91032234 speedway has the best customer service and super fast shipping. that's why i use them lol. hope this helps. oh and also the 3" i speak of is a generic number. you'll need to figure out how long to make it since i can't be for sure off the pics alone.
you could do like this guy did http://www.streetsource.com/forum/72245_1_Toyota-Trucks-steering-shaft.html i think this is how im going to do it too
