I know this is a fairly common thing, but in most cases it seems to have been a slow process of being hard to start to only starting infrequently to not starting at all. My problem was immediate. I have had no problems whatsoever with staring, except tonight. I drove to work and everything was normal, but when I went to go home, the starter wouldn't even start. The lights on the dash come on, and the stereo works fine. I suspected that the battery may be dead, so I got a jump, but that didn't help. I can hear a relay click when I turn the key, but no starter movement. My first steps will be: Check and clean connections Check neutral start safety switch alignment Try rotating crankshaft to make sure it isn't frozen Anything else I should do/check/ am I missing?
Well, that didn't help any, but I did just completely rewire the starter (easy enough because I think that the previous job was a rewire). Somehow I must have burn out, shorted, or just lost connection one on of those signal wires. It works now, but I also know my neutral start safety switch is wonky, because I was able to accidentally start in reverse. Haha, our back parking lot at work already a couple of my coworkers' un-running cars: a mid 70s z series Nissan that has a v8 sbc swapped in, and an 80s Porsche 944. Betsy was right at home with them, but I'm glad she is back on the streets again!
