Hey Guys daes anyone know if Dropped Spindles from an 84 will fit a 77 I want to tuck 18's I need spindles
Nope, 79-83 are REEALLY similar to 78 down. Ive got drop spindles on my 82, but I doubt it would work on yours. 84 and up ball joint configuration is different. Like 2 pointed down compared to 1 up 1 down....
you could tuck 18s without them. it gives more camber which helps tuxk and still turn. if i put 18s on, id tuck rim
Oh Really.... Well there is yet another fine case of someone talking out their collective rear... My Buddy Justin tells me I will have to have dropped spindles to tuck 18's and lay frame
they do help correct some of the camber you get from the arms moving up that far of an angle. so he isnt wrong. but hes probably a mazda guy, and their balljoints bind laying out on tall tires (which are typical of 18s, even with 35 series tires). but, for a point of referance, these trucks can lay the front crossmember on a 24" tall tire without balljoint bind. if you flip the balljoints to the topside of the control arms (bj flip) then you can run slightly taller tires. so a 215/35/18 would lay out. if you want the truck to be true flat frame, you need to z the frame. but that keeps the suspension the same. i would still advise reorienting the lower balljoint to point up. thats about all it takes to run the late model drop spindles. i measured it all out before. you just run them flipped side to side, since their steering is on the front and ours is on the rear. basically, look how much camber my truck has, and imagine if i lowered it another 1-1/2" up front. thats how much camber you would have laid out. or, imagine how much camber i have now, and thats slightly more than youd have laid out with spindles.
as for the wheels themselves, if you havent bought them already...you will need quite a bit of offset. how much exactly depends on if you plan to narrow the rear end. and how low you plan to drive it. more offset means you can still get close to full steering lock low. less offset means youll have to lift it more to clear. i used to have 16x7 w/+40 on 225/50/16s in the front. i barely cleared sitting this low. thats why i flared the fenders so far. if i had a smaller tire like a 205/50/16 it would have freed up a bit of clearance. also, the more offset you run while turning low, can cause you to contact the rim into the control arm. i did at full lock. an 18 might be better. might be worse. i personally wouldnt run that large of a rim on these trucks. but thats because i like always being super low and for that i need some usable suspension. although i may plan to bag it soon. for your homework on this whole subject, read my build thread and read toydattos 1970 hilux build thread. he bagged his and is just slightly off the front crossmember. those two should give you some info on setting the nose of these trucks close to the dirt.
I doubled checked all my notes today at the yards. 85-95 spindles will work on 78 and back trucks. Flip the lower ball to point up, and put it on top of the control arm. Flip them side to side on the truck. Should all match up nice. Provides no drop BUT does have the option of drop spindles for that era. And stock ones will pull the wheels in about .5-.75" vs stock stuff. So fitting a big rim shouldn't be too tough. And running better brakes is always a plus. It'll be my back pocket idea for if I find some low offset front rims. And I'm narrowing a rearend for that end. Just thought I would post the info while its fresh in my head.
Hey Byker, I thought it over of flipping the lower BJ on my 82 before I did the front end swap. I dont remember perfectly, but something wont work right. Like the ball joint is the wrong size or it wont sit flat or something????? Definatly explore the idea though. Once you can run post 84+ stuff, a world of stuff opens up option wise.
Thank you My Brotha.. I can tuck 17's but with out Drop spinals I will not be able to lay frame I don't believe for you My Friend Changed a little color since you last seen pics, I found some straight fenders and doors. as you can see I took my springs completely out and mono'd the rear, and still not as low as you are. But I'm rolling on 17's
if you use later style stock spindles and flip the lower balljoint it will lower your truck. think about it. the lower arm and spring are staying in the same position. but by putting the spindle on top of the lower arm its moving the spindle up which acts like a drop spindle for your truck. it will lower it around 2" and to lay flat frame your still gonna need to Z the frame at least 1.5" i went 2 just to be safe. and if joes suspension is his thing how come he doesnt have any my truck is gonna be static though. 2" Z late spindle with bj flip stock coils 1" sfbd equals 5" of front drop on stock coils and i bought 205/50/16 tires for the probe wheels so with that and using teh later spindle to suck my wheels in it should be good
