Okay, this morning on my way to school, my speedometer started jumping around, I was going about forty, then it jumped to 90, then 70, and every number that would take a while for my truck to really reach. I unplugged the cable from the transfer case and reconnected it and I'm hoping this helps. If not, what should I do? It's a good thing that I had installed a tachometer in it to hint me on the speed...
Had the same problem in my 90 4runner Mine turned out to be the cable itself. It dried up and started to catch causing the needle to jump. 2 quick steps to find the culprit: Disconnect the cable from the tranny and drive it around the block and listen for anything unusual while in neutral. If it sounds good, go ahead and reconnect then disconnect the cable directly from the speedo and do the same process. If you still don't hear anything, it's probably your speedo itself. If it's the cable, the job is pretty easy replacing it. I found mine at Napa for like 30 bucks. Good luck!
Thanks, I had disconnected and reconnected from the transfer case, seemed to help, well, at least temporarily, I'll have to drive further to really tell if it worked.
Can you leave it disconnected from the transfer case??? with out loseing oil?? I tow mine behind a motorhome and its showing more miles then I drive and the Ins,co is starting to check mileage. Thanks Don
I don't see why not... even though I plugged it back in, it looked like there was no oil on the cable... maybe a bit of grease. If your's is a 4cyl., did you try puting the transfer case (not gear shifter) in neutral? I don't know if that will make any difference, but I hear that it's supposed to be used during towing or winching. btw... sorry to keep you waiting on this Tcloud, I thought that this thread was done, with my speedometer not freaking out anymore...
