Id say the usual... Intake (more free flowing), exhaust same deal. Remove the Cat and put a straight pipe in. Helps to free things up... but if you have to do emissions testing there u are the nice thing is that there direct bolt in so when the time comes just put it back in for the day.

    what motor? 22r. cheap first..

    tweak the timing 10 degrees
get a electric fan, will free up alittle power from the motor.
more open air filter setup.(maybe a carb too, if ur EFI not to sure..)
    free flowing exhaust.
better ignition..(spark plugs, coil, distubutor and cap)

i think thats it with out really spending to much on the motor. Or atleast thats all i can think of right now anyways..

Depends how old and/or how many miles your motor currently has. Assuming you've already done your typical tune-up, I'd start with brand new vacuum hoses and a gasket kit. That means anything under the hood that is rubber should be inspected and swapped out for something new. Gasket kit; intake, exhaust, head, oil pain, etc.

If any of the above is sub par you're already losing some horses, and though headers and whatnot will deliver a difference even on an unhealthy motor, but nowhere near as much as it would if you were starting out with a healthy motor.

I've personally done the vacuum lines on one of my vehicles - BIG DIFFERENCE. ($50)

I'm about to do the whole gasket set on another vehicle. THEN....I'll go headers, weber carb, straight pipe....the works! :)

. . . some great stuff going on here! Make her breath better, deliver the fuel better ( hence changing that fuel filter that always gets forgotten about ), make her get that exhaust out the fastest with the least restriction like noted, that CAT and stock muffler can totally kill mileage and power, Use a good fuel additive ( I.E. Marvel Mystery oil - just for 1 - ) to crankcase and fuel to keep the fuel system & motor clean, some people like synthetic oils for improved horses, Dont forget about total lube and service on the " entire " chassis - especially tranny & rear axle, keep those tires @ correct pressure for mileage/power/safety, totally agree on the ignition system - if anything start there first, " the best plugs " and components - dont skimp for a dollar just to spend $100's between services, last but not least and probably at the top of the list for some, get rid of all that added weight you dont need or dont use, little things go along way - i.e. - 700 lb LOL spare tire dangling underneath and most likely full of mud and crud, unused tools-junk-crap in the back and what not youll be amazed at what holds ya back from flying down the road with an evil yotagrin on yer face . . .

i've also heard disconnecting the EGR vaccume actuator helps in the engine's responsiveness. take some of the lag out from bottom end (when it normally opens up)

get a K&N filter in there but dont disconnect your cold air intake boot!! you wouldnt beleive how many trucks i see without these on the 22r's. all that does is make it to where it sucks hot air in from the engine bay area, especially if you have a header.

cap off the vaccume hose to the heat riser intake. this will leave the flap inside the cold air intake closed off so no heat from the exhaust manifold comes in to heat the intake air charge. keeps the air coming in cooler that way.

also, put a 180* F thermostat in it in place of the stock 195* F. heat kills motors.... less heat will make it live longer and add a little power. the heat is mainly meant for the emmisions control systems operating at their top efficiency.

Above any and all additives Ive used, I can feel the difference and see it to everytime I adjust the valves, change the oil, cruise on down the road, a proven formula that works and has worked since 1923, how many other additives have that kind of reputation to back it up?! Feel free to read the testimonials, the techs and ask a mechanic here @ http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/
