Was trying to find the part number for this chrome runner on the side of my 1982, with the black insert. Though after some noodling, I've determined: 1. there is no way this is still sold anywhere 2. Google images shows me maybe 1 in 10 trucks of this generation have them 3. therefore it's probably either a dealer option, or was aftermarket. But I don't even know what to call it, in order to search for replacements. Thoughts?
Try: "side body moulding" (from my Celica factory service manual). The reason you don't see them often is because: 1. They're usually installed on high-end models only such as Toyota's SR-5 or GT (as opposed to ST) versions of cars; 2. If installed only by adhesive, people used to remove them for a "cleaner" look.
I had the trim on my 81. Each end the actual chrome/rubber strip were pop riveted along with the metal tip onto the body. The rivet is hidden underneath the rubber. I had to shorten mine up when installing my factory 4x4 fender flares onto the bed. Hope that helps and good luck
Mike, The others are correct when referring it to body side mouldings. I'm the original owner of my '82 SR5 and the side mouldings was never a common thing installed on the trucks. Over the past 39 years I've been around these trucks, I have only seen side moulding in pictures. The 1980 Toyota Corolla liftback got them whether it was a DX or an SR5. There is a page in the Toyota Genuine Accessory Catalog that has a short blurb about it with the part numbers. I just checked in the Toyota Dealer Inventory and all of the part numbers are discontinued. Btw, here's my truck:
dude, you read my mind about your truck.... I spent the first 30 minutes on this site just trying to find more photos, I freaking love your wheels! 82 gang!
As a followup, I am going to try removing it, though it appears screwed into the body. My grandmother found this old photo album - apparently my grandfather decided to hang out and document some body work after he got in a wreck haha. Too bad he didn't decide to remove them then.
Mike, The mouldings don't look bad, but it would look cleaner when removed. To me, it's odd to see the mouldings on the truck simply because it was not a common add-on.
