I recently bought a 5 speed for my truck, pretty sure it's a w55 as it was behind a 22re in an 87 pickup and it's an aluminum case. But my problem is the guy didn't have a shifter for it. My question is will a different w series shifter swap into it? Or does somebody have one laying arou that would work? I'm missing the lever and piece that hold it in place.. I have the top plate piece, I can post pics if needed.
Lots of different shifters will fit if the retainer is the right one for the mount. Do you have the mounting plate for the shifter?
they are interchangeable. some more easily than others. i know some of them, u must open the case to get the bottom piece -the one where the nylon bushing at the end of the shifter sits in -as it is slid on the shift shaft - in some cases, this piece must be removed and swapped into new trans to match shifter lever and housing. i hope i explained that correctly. anyways, in Gotham city........
If the shifter is held in with 4 10mm bolts then yes its a "W" series trans and yes any "W" series shifter will work. (I have a spare one from a W46 4 speed, swapped in my W58 celica shifter). If the shifter is the "push down and twist" its a "G" series trans and only "G" series shifter's will fit... ***Note: you may be able to use either shifter on either trans but that requires splitting the shifter into two pieces to change out the shifter hold down style... Hope this helps.
B.Y.E it's a push down and twist, but it looks EXACTLY like marlin crawlers pic of a w55. White Trash I do have the base plate, just not the lever and lock in place dealeo..
One meeeeeelion dollars!!!!!!! I'll take a gander tomorrow when I'm at the parts stash and make sure I've got one first. If I do I'd say $40 shipped if that works for you.
hate to burst your bubble but the W boxes came with push-down-and-twist/cam-lock shifter bases for several years. My 91 has a W55 and a push/twist retainer. Marlin crawler (I think) has an outline of which years/models have it.
That's what I think mine is, except for the push down and twist dilemma.. Anyone know what markings or number would be on it if it is a w55?
What dilemma? shifter mounting method doesn't differentiate the models. alas, toyota didn't feel it was necessary to mark manual transmissions in any way. Compare to pics online to figure out which family (W or G) and check input/output revolutions or count gear teeth for ratios as to which model exactly. (55, 58, etc)
