Im looking to maybe shaving my taillights. For those that have done it do you get hasseled by the cops. Would I need to run other oem lights (caddy, supra or range) or would I be ok with aftermarket led ones( lokar or avs types)
Do some searching on Cali's DMV website about their statutes and such on motor vehicles. I did the research for my state before doing mine and since its kinda grey Im using the 49" LED taligate bar thats usually used on trailers or bigger trucks as an add on. However the kit Im using is DOT and ANSI approved and thats all thats required in Idaho along with reflective devices (I used flush mount reflectors bought from AutoZone) If I do get harrased by cops then I have all the codes printed out along with the DOT info on the lights, I also have numerous other codes printed out for the same reason.
Ok so I found some laws Taillamps 24600. And from what I read it doesnt say anything about requiring lights to be dot approved (unless I missed it), which according to Avs and lokar their lights are not dot approved. in case anyone wants to look here is the website 2012 Vehicle Code General Provisions and Divisions 1 thru 18: Table of Contents
