I'm looking at purchasing a 73 but I need to do a check on the s/n first. The guy is telling me he can't find it on the dash and gave me some number inside the door. Can anyone tell me where the s/n is located on this year? Also can you tell me if it's 17 digit? Thx.
there will be a serial number on the front left side of the frame, in between the suspension and radiator. it should match the sticker in the jamb, and there should also be a riveted plate on the left inner fender. it's not 17 digits. i think it's around 10ish..
burnz has it dead on. but if the underhood and cab tag match but the frame doesnt, ask him if he knows of anyone every swapping a new cab onto the frame. if its all solid, and the title matches the numbers (or one of the sets) then get it. youre legal as long as one or the other matches the title. unless canada prohibits cab swaps on old trucks. keep us posted. because the seattle hilux crew, and burnz...wanna see it. haha.
also it should say RN20 or RN23 if its a shortbed. RN28 if its a long bed. the 6 digits after that are the production number of that specific type of chassis. i usually memorize the vins and plates to all my vehicles. burnz probably tries but he has like 2-1/2 dozen trucks so i understand if he forgets a few
Here it is! I bought it for $500. I'm the 4th owner of the truck and the guy I bought it from bought it from his cousin who bought it from the original owner. The guy I bought it from remembered the original owner getting this truck when it was new. I was told it has 61,000 original miles but I'm not very sure on this. When I drove it home the speedo was working and so was the odometer, kinda. The tenths of a mile was turning over, but it wouldn't turn anything else over. The p/o's daughter got in an accident with this truck in the right rear. He took the bucket out and was going to get it fixed. (I have to get that from him yet.) The brake light is toast so I have to find another one of those. The floors are rusted and so are the mounts behind the seats. It has factory buckets and console with an auto trans. It runs like a top and I drove it home without a hiccup. The front end was pretty tight and it has newer exhaust. All components are in working order. I'm not sure of my plans yet. Originally I was thinking of doing a static drop and then I thought about possible bagging it. I also have a 4x4 frame here from a 88 and thought about putting the body on that. I think I did pretty good for $500 and on top of that you don't find many trucks like these up north here. Any that were here have long rusted away. Here are some pics. Let me know your thoughts.
nice! when i first got mine i was thinking of adding the 79-83 taillights to it since they are easier to find.
I've gotta find me one of those Clymer books... Nice set of pics, btw! Can't wait to get mine back from the shop so I can take some.
If you were like much of my Family from Manitoba/Winnipeg, you'd head that truck in the direction of Vancouver Island, or Southwest (like my Dad) to Southern California! You asked which direction to take...Heh James
