Ok so my buddy has a 79 with a leaky exhaust manifold. The thing sounds like a ****!n lawnmower. lol. Anyway, the RPMs go up as its warms up and well he wants to change all the top end gaskets. Obviously we need to buy new head bolts my question is, do we need a torque wrench put everything back together? Also what words of advice do u guys have for me? Im looking for tips and tricks to make this job a lil easier. Like wat parts do i need to clean? and how? between me and him im the one with more hands on work on cars as hea really knows nada. Help me out guys
i replaced the head gasket on my 22re. i re-used the head bolts (they only torque to like 58 ft. lbs.) i would HIGHLY recommend a torque wrench for the head (a unevenly torqued head is asking for trouble), and some of the others just to be safe. things like accessory brackets, etc. i usually do by hand. for the head you want to clean it very well, and put a dab of silicone on the front area between the cylinder and the timing chain hole. shonuff did a "how to" on a quickie head gasket job. it's on here somewhere. i would recommend a manual for the torque specs, as well as the torque sequence.
sequence and torque specs in the "how to" http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1907 id also highly recommend you do a compression check before you take anything apart. then when the head is off, take it to a machine shop and have them resurface it removing as lil material as possible. id also think about valve stem seals and adding a cam while your at it.
Well my friend aint looking to spend to much but i really wana tell him to get the head resurfaced. and Shonuff ive had your how to saved to my favorites. Just wondering if there was anything that could help me make the job a lil easier
did it blow the head gasket or is itt like preventitive maintenence thing? if i were to do the head gasket i would also do the timing chain and tentioner and followers. you already heve the thing apart and its not that much more . i would only have the head hot tanked and like ShoNuff said above have a machine shop take off ass little material as possible. btw you can rent a torkwrentch at your local auto prts store . make sure with that exhaust manifold gasket you replace the manifold to pipe side gasket too.
Well i think its a lil of both. preventive and cuz it needs it. cuz theres a really bad leak on the exhaust side but i cant seem to track it down too well. and the RPMs stay at 2k wen cold and 2500 wen at operating temp. and it seems to overheat as well. And were guna replace ALL the top end gaskets + the exhaust. I think i remembered seeing something bout tool rentals so were guna look into it too
