So you're taking out a slider and putting in flat glass? Easy enough. Usually the window has to match the seal when changing types. Taking them out a few flat head screw drivers and a tub of wheel bearing grease or vasoline is about all you need. Wiggle the driver through from the inside til it's outside the seal. Put another next to it and start to work it around the seal. Have a few more handy to lock it open every little bit. Start at the upper corner. Work down the side and then you can start to undo the top and bottom at once and it should pop loose after about half way. To reinstall soak the seal in warm soapy water for a while to get it soft and slippery. Wrap it onto the glass. Set the bottom edge from corner to corner then start trying to get the inner flange over the cab from the inside working up. Once you get it to the top corner keep working it across until it is all done. A screwdriver helps work it from the outside in. Start at the bottom where you set it. I've done these coming out and in with sticks and dull pocket knives. Without grease or soap on cold seals. So it can be done pretty easy of you do it right. As to why, I get locked out sometimes :p

just don't scratch your cab. Wrap those tools with towels.

as for removal, it's easier if you open the window and just pull on the frame on the outside and push from the inside. Work from the top.

Hammer (Removal Tool) Duct Tape (Install tool).............. Lol. Get help with the new glass, have someone push on the out side wile you pull the rope on the inside. I use cheap dish soap, Lube the body opening and the seal. Push the gasket up on to the top flange and work your way top to bottom. Take your time and work out the lingering "flaps" with a screw driver. Easy if you take your time. Look to the local VW Bug guys if you still need help. This is a must on old bugs, kind of a 101.

And an extra pair of hands if you're using the string method.

I used to take my flat glass out every day if it was hot out. A few flat heads is all i needed. Never used soap or lube. Wasnt worried if i scratch the paint a tiny bit. Was just always careful.

I swapped my 75 dodge from slider to flat and it was a bitch! Huge window, plus we have a headache rack for lights so theres a bunch of tubing behind the glass. Makes a yota seem easy lol.

If you actually open the rear window, you can just pull on the frame and it'll pull itself out
