I need to go with a narrower rearend in my 88. so Im seeing that the 89-95 have two different widths can I get meassurements from drum to drum at the wheel mounting surface and what options you have ie; 4spd, 5spd, std cab, excab, engine ect. I'm trying to get an idea what truck I'm looking for so if I need to buy a whole truck I can get the right rear end

    thanks

from what iv come to understand is that they get wider through the years, the 96-04 tacoma is bigger than the 89-94 and the 89-94 is bigger than 84-88 i believe and so on. so your gonna want to go with a model or two older. i kno when i had my 02 tacoma i ran a 91 and on my 94 which is my current truck it has an 86 rear end in it hope this helps

Not exactly sure on how much older they go but my 76 and 78 long box trucks both came stock with 53" wide housings with an 8" differential.

AFAIK, The 2wd from 79-95 are all the same width. The only thing that changed was the pinion depth from the axle CL between the 7.5" and the 8". From what I'm told, the 8" requires a Driveline that's ~1" shorter than a truck with the 7.5". also, the 2wd and 4wd use different length axles since the 4x frame is wider than the 2wd and over all track width is wider on the 4x. Makes sense to me.

The rear I pulled out of the 86 measures in at I believe 55" drum face to drum face. If you were local you could have it for $60 if that is what you needed. I needed a 52", so I just narrowed a ford 8.8 rear.
