my 79 has a 4:10 ratio in the rear. its a 7.5" 2 pinion rear. my question is- will the third member with a different ratio but still a 7.5" axle bolt in? i'm trying to get a little more speed for driving the highway out of it.
Should aslong as it is out of a 7.5 2wd rearend i have 3.43 rearend in mine with a 4 speed i am turning about 3500 rpm @ 65
yep. id be hunting the yards for a 82-85 supra. no 3rd to swap, but your 3rd will hold the carrier. plus its LSD. ya dont see to many trucks with a higher then 4.10 gears.
ok thanks! also nuff, i checked my other 79 that came with a w50 and it also has a 4:10. so i know i'll be fine to swap trannies. i'll have to tell my friend he's a douchebag!
Hey Burnz if you want the best hwy speed and really sacrafice torque, so your city mpg will be ****. The 4speed truck like mine comes with a 8" 30 spline with factory 3.07 gear ratio so with your 5 speed you should turn about 1800 rpm at 65. All 4speeds from 84-88 come with this. Its probly not what you're looking for but they are cheap and plentyfull.
i have the stock rearend from my 86 with the 4 speed in the back yard, but its wider than the 79-83 axles. my 66 mustang has a 2:80 rearend, but since it's a v-8 it still got up to speed rather well.
i think a 3.07 would be perfect for the w58. first gear is useless and 5th isnt quite high enuff with a 3.42
My truck originally came with a 4-speed and 3:42 gears... I'm interested in the 7.5" 4:10 diff if you guys don't want it... PM me if you want to get rid of it....
My 87 4speed came with a 3.07 its a 8" w/30 splines, they are all over the junk yards because 4speeds are undesirable, the carrier is specific only to the 4 speed because the pinion is so large, its about the size of both your fists put together.
Although if you were to get a 79-83 4x4 housung with axles, the 8" carrier from the 4 speed should fit but I'm not sure if the 4x4 is wider than the 2wd in that year.
4wd was a 6 lug. but im sure he could put something together. what i wonder, is i have a 78, i read its a 7" rear end. in one of my manuals i think. dunno the spline count. anything i can do to put a stronger one in? its narrow and low, so ive been at a toss up. i thought about using the 79-83 unit even though its a little wider, and putting a 4.10 lsd in if i can find one. i havent blown up the 7 inch dinko yet, but im sure i will the way i shift lol
I was also thinking of swapping my 7.5 rearend with the 8" with 3.07 gears but would it be worth it? @ troll I know you said that those 8" have 30 spline axles, so will 4x4 axles with 6lugs fit in there?
Same splines, different length shafts I think. The 2wd axles always run narrower than 4wd but I think 79-85 shafts would fit into an 89-95 housing since they are both 55.5" wide.
Picked up 7.5" from my good friend with 4:11 gearing (open diff). 5spd. screaming at 70mph 3000 rpms. Which is really only 55mph on 15's with 50series rubber.
Any other G series diff center will bolt into it. This is a diff code identification for early Toyotas.
