Ok so for about a week or so i've noticed a very slight humming/rawness throughout my truck while driving. Initially i thought i was wheel bearings, then maybe my power steering pump crapping out and now it seems like its coming from the rearend.

It makes the sound at all speeds/gears & rolling in neutral but it gets slightly more noticeable when your going at or above 40mph. Almost like the feel as if i had All terrain wheels on. I got 191,xxx miles on the truck, with a 3" drop, Blocks are not angled if that could possibly be a factor i don't know.

I was maybe thinking it was my u-joint going bad?

Anyone have anything similar like this?

    thanks

Could be, I had a ujoint fail in my suburban and it made noises like that, but I also had a vibration at highway speeds.

Jack up the rear end, and with it in gear or park, spin the wheels. If it's the wheel bearings or carrier bearings, you'll feel it.

Since it's lowered I would guess it's a universal joint. You could get some shims under the blocks to correct the pinion-to-transmission angle. I had one explode on my truck when I was static dropped. I can't remember if it was when I had just 3 inch blocks or when I had 3 inch blocks+dearched springs. I always have to install a Tacoma 4x4 slip yoke driveshaft, when I lower a truck now, so that it won't ever happen. I have an extra cab like you.

^Whats the difficulty of fixing that? Cost?

Not a mechanic, but i'm not a person that goes to the shop for an oil change.

You need to do some research about driveline angles. I'm not a mechanic either but you need an angle finder and some shims to fix it IMO You want to look at the angle of the output shaft at the transmission in relation to the angle of the pinion on the rear diff because I know you have a 2piece driveshaft. A Tacoma 4x4 double cardan slip yoke driveshaft is kinda costly depending on where you get it from. I remember mine being 4-500bucks at a wreckers. Shims would be much cheaper but I'm not real sure how well you could make it work cuz I've never done it that way.

I'm probably gonna sit on this for a little.
Don't have too much money to play with right now, but i will have to get something done before 2012 (School).

Your numbers that you posted for a drive shaft got me kinda :/ haha. It's gonna run me double that here in Hawaii. Gonna try talk to my neighbor who's got a friend with a transmission shop, maybe do everything one time since my clutch has been feeling thin ever since i bought the truck.

I'll post up my findings in a little.

The fact that the noise doesn't change whether in gear, neutral, or braking rules out the u joint in my mind. I've had my share of bad u joints over the years in my trail truck, and when ever they go, they are way more noticeable coasting or braking. The fact that it is consistant with speed makes me suspicious of the wheel bearings. Just sayin'.

u joints usually make a more clunk sound and you can literally move a drive shaft with your hands.

    I'm going Litneon.

    what's the fluid condition?

Our reared bearing isn't pressed in is it?

I know the front isn't pressed, so the rear shouldn't be either right? I'm gonna try throw it up on jack stands tomorrow and try look.

Well, it's pressed onto the axle shaft. There's a C clip that holds it into place. But to get there, you have to disconnect the brake line to the side you want to pull, take 4 nuts loose, and slide it on out.

You should be able to tell without pulling it which one (if any) is going. Sometimes, however, without a load on it the bearing won't make the noise. It can be frustrating.

Went to a shop, they quoted me $1400 for both sides (bearing) wtf. Clearly after today the sound got worse. Only my drivers side seemed a tad shaky maybe a toothpick of play.

Wen't to a Transmission shop, got it down to $600 parts/labor total....not as bad...but still hurts. I'd chance it myself but i'd rather not eff it up.

Gonna go drop it off first thing in the morning, & it should be done by the end of the day.

Shop couldn't find anything wrong, opened up everything bearings are all good. They adjusted my pinion bearing though? Could not find anything at all. Put new oil.

    :brickknock:

So i drove it, and now it feels like just the front. Put it up on jack stands tried spinning the front wheels, they do not spin freely. :duh:

Thinking warped rotors now, i do maybe once every other week open it up to 100-105mph, i try not to be too hard on the breaks when i do run it like that. Can't really see that it's warped or not when it's off the truck
Took my bearings out both inner/outer have some play & are not exactly 'tight'.

So tomorrow i'm gonna go grab new rotors/bearings possibly pads but they still got a good amount of meat. This is all that it could possibly be wrong.

The sound stops when i'm on the breaks so hopefully this ends tomorrow when i change everything.

If i still have the problem after, i'm gonna drop the truck off at a scrap yard :verdict_in:

warped rotors should be felt when braking, through the steering wheel.

are your wheels not "true" ? like out of shape or balance?

My wheels aren't balanced, been running it like that forever......But they've never gave me problems.

It must've been my rotors cause my bearings we're good still, but i just changed em since i was there. Got some Ceramic pads & 'premium' brake rotors. The only thing premium about it is the price :rolleyes2: .

Took it for a run this morning after i got done and :waytogo: problem fixed.

    Finally:eyecrazy:
