Hey, I'm new at the whole Toyota game. I just picked up an 87 2wd yota truck a couple of weeks ago. I have been trying to get all the leaks taken care of as I use it as my daily work truck. I'm trying to fix the tranny leak from what I believe is called the rear tranny seal. It's the seal where the driveline enter the tranny. It's leaking pretty bad. I bought a new seal today from napa and installed it and its still leaking. Anyone know what the correct part number would be or if there is some identification on the tranny that the parts guy should know to make sure I get the right one. It seams like there are multiple part numbers listed. It's an 87 22r automatic 2wd. Can anyone point me in the right direction. So far the only idea I have had is had the parts guy order the next size down inside diameter seal to compare to the one I already installed. Seems like there is a little play in there at the seal when I shake the driveline. Sorry for the novel and newbie question. Thanks in advance for any help.
Besides the fact that the wrong seal was installed. Behind that seal in the tailshaft is a bushing. That bushing could be worn as well. I've never replaced it but I think it can be done at home.
I'll have to check that out when I pull the seal again. The bushing shouldn't affect it leaking though would it?
So I think I may have found the problem and it may be a combination of things. I pulled it back apart today to give replacing the seal another shot and to check out the bushing. It's hard for me to tell how much the bushing is warn because I don't know how thick it is supposed to be. But what I did notice is that the bushing has warn a groove into the driveline. I put the driveline in without the seal and there is quite a bit of play. The guy at westbay couldn't find any listing for the bushing. There are two slots on the outside of the bushing where you could get in there with some needle nose. Does anyone know how easy that bushing pulls out and if its something you can do at home? Also if there is wear on the driveshaft I'm assuming I should start looking for another driveshaft that doesn't have a groove warn into it? Any info anyone could give me would be great. Also the previous seal I put in was the correct seal but a very poor quality one. I put in a premium seal and set it at a different position so it didn't ride in the grooves on the shaft from the seals too. It's not dumping out anymore but still leaking a little.
Toyota W55, W56, W58, W59, Tail Housing Bushing [CT-57066A] - $3.99 : Automatic, Standard Transmission and Transfer Case Rebuild Kits, Cobra Transmission Parts 1-800-293-1848 you have to pull of the tail housing then use a flat blade and knock it out with hammer not to hard
Yeah. If u have a groove in that end yoke it's time for a new one. Or else it'll wear the new bushing.
Cool thanks for the info. Kinda what I expected. Not what I wanted to here but pretty much what I expected lol.
Does anyone know if there is anyone that produces a new or refurb'd slip yoke (think thats what its called) for the driveshaft? Or am I gonna have to scour some junk yards? I spent a couple hours on the net trying to find something today but had no luck. I did find an extension housing bushing tool that allows you to remove the bushing in the truck.
Finally had time today to tear back into it. I pulled the extension housing and replaced the bushing and the seal again with a quality seal. The lubricating grooves in the bushing were completely worn gone. So far not a drop of fluid but I have only driven it about 5 miles. Thanks for all the previous info about the bushing. I wouldn't have know to replace it.
@Hurley62 or whoever else. I have replaced my Ext housing seal a few times and it is seeping again. Questions Does a 5 speed G57 have a Bushing ? Do I have to remove the extension housing to change the bushing ? The only one I see on partsgeek lists on e for a auto trans. How hard is it to do if so ? I am in no bind just researching for future repair. Anybody know what part numbers I would need for a G57 ? Thanks 22R88
