what are the pro's and con's to over axle bag setup vs. mounting bags on the four link bar? Can a decent ride and lift be achieved with an over the axle set up?
Bag on axle will limy lift and ride a little rougher. My orange yota is bag behind axle with shocks an the link bar. Rides alright but doesn't get alot of lift. My ex cab is bag on lower bar rides nice without shocks and gets ridiculous lift. Reasone it gets more lift is because it's closer to the pivot point. If I was to do another truck it would be bag on bar again.
ya mounting the bags on the link bars will provide a better ride and more lift. you are not supposed to tow like that but who tow's with a bagged truck. Basically over axle setups are a bare bones " got it bagged " setup while a cantilever setup is a next step up. There are other methods like bell cranks n what not but those are way more complex to setup. With the canti setup make sure you mount the bag in the middle of the bars or slightly offset twords the pivot point. this will change the ratio of leveage the bag has to 1:2 or less.
ok. thanks for the quick answers guys. Looking to bag the truck once and not have to re-do it because it rides like sh**. I'm new to the bag world so figured I'd ask the guys that have experience with old 'yotas.
i prefer slam bags or conti bags, nothing else touches those two brands. Line, valves and bags are things you dont want to skimp on. EDIT: i personally only run slam bags, and i will never switch brands. ive had em pop from rubbing and they replace em free. i know some people got a bad batch of bags but slam replaced em no questions asked. I love their ride and their quality and their customer service is second to none.
dillinja, thanks for the advice on bags, what about valves? I'm not looking for a fast bag setup or anything like that. more or less lift to drive, air down to drag occasionally and park.
3/8 lines and valves. Parker line, valves and fittings are the best but expensive. Figure 200 bucks in fittings bout 500 in valves and maybe 200 in lines.
I love slams aswell. I have conti. On my orange one but want to replace them with slams. I heard good things about Parker, smc, and asco valves. I have gcxtreme 350s and airlift. I like both of them alot. For fittings everyone uses different kinds I like ptc cause of the easyness of them. Thts what we use at work for everything and they hold up great with sometimes 200psi. But compressions are probably the best
I use all SMC on my toy, valves are 4 years old and still work decent, gotta clean the diaphrams every once and a while and run a touch of oil through the lines. Im planning on doing 1/2 hardline cause I want it to hop. If you dont want it that fast then 3/8 is perfect. Fittings will set you back a few bills. If you just want simple up/down front and up/down rear then you will still need 8 valves. The cheapies off ebay for $230 for all 8 will work but only for a few years. Line is not that expensive if you buy it in rolls. I think 50 ft is like $30 or such from any air ride parts place. Good luck and anymore ?'s just let us know
If you want just front and back you need 4 valves. 8 valves would be front back side to side and individual
You would also need to run check valves with a f/b 4 valve setup for cornering. Pressure differential... My .02
I did read somewhere that even f/b setups were better with 8 valves so you don't get excessive body roll when turning. is that correct?
i prefer to have side to side control in my truck cause it seems that the front and back never lift up perfectly level, so i might need to tap one side down a bit to level out. I have friends that run 6 valves, T in the rear and left right up front. works good for them, i was actually thinking of trying this on my next setup.
Yah I wouldnt run less than 8 valves even for a front/back system. Air can transfer and its just a sloppy mess unless you dont care about ride quality. PLUS even if you set it up for front/back and eventually want to go to FBSS or ALL 4 corners then all you gotta do is wire it. For example cause I like to type... I got 8 valves with a 10 switch box I have it set up F,B,LS,RS,ALL, CORNERS, I was running a 7 switch that did F,B,ALL,CORNERS. My honda was 4 valve F,B only with T's and it rolled worse than having stock suspension!!!
