I've been looking around trying to plan a build for some time now, ive asked alot of stupid questions and done alot of stupid things because im new to the whole automotive project thing, so bear with me please... i want to swap the 22r out of my truck and replace it with something much more powerful, thinking either a 1/2jz, anywayssss.. im looking for rear end possibilites and the two that i liked the most are rajzswap/MattMcCarthy's truck with the ford 8.8 rear end and turbo dave's "general" drift truck where he took a 300zx rear end and swapped it in, his looked like it had coil overs? i dont really plan on dragging it but i definitely would like to slide it around a little bit basically, i want to know which would be easiest and i kinda want coilovers so would that be possible with the ford rear end? im going to go back through rajzswap's thread with the 8.8 rear, also both these trucks are the generation after mine... i have an 86 regular cab, the whole suspension has me incredibly confused because i know just about nothing about this stuff, thanks for any input
i did a 8.8 swap on my 84 extra cab and it was real easy. with the stock leaf springs its pretty much bolt in. the spring pads are the same width apart so the axle sits in the same spot. one bad thing is the 8.8 is several inches wider then the factory axle. i cant remember if it was 2 or 4 inches wider then the stock axle. but i know you will either have to run wheel spacers in the front or run different back spacing on your wheels. but other than that just read rajzswap 8.8 article and go from there. also if your thinking about goin coil overs eventually the 8.8 is starting to get a pretty good following with the jeep guys so you might be able to find brackets for coilovers. we put an 8.8 in the back of my brothers tj and it was pretty simple but that was with just coil springs not coil overs
yea, ive been thinking making my own brackets would probably be the easiest way, but i was just wondering what everyone else was doing in order to get some coilovers... seems like the 8.8 is unanimous for the easiest swap, ill have to look more into the whole subject, i have a while before i start the project, just trying to plan it as best i can
