Starting a build thread, again. But this time for my brothers truck.

We just drove all the way up to Colorado to get it. A 78 Chinook pop top camper dually thing. Its in pretty good condition considering its age.

His plans are for the truck to convert it into a consession truck and sell shaved ice out of it. We have done our research on the subject and really think he/we can make real money with it.

Typical toyota story though, a stoner/bum was living in it and had it parked for nearly two years. We got there, jumped it with the 82, started on its second lick. Runs nearly perfect except for the hi idle taking 10 minutes to kick down, and a roughness that sounds like a compression problem. Drove to the gas station, aired up the tires and drove it 140 miles like nothing. He paid 600 cash.

    Lets see, to do list...

Rear brakes toast. Soft pedal but fronts work ok. Needs wheel cyls, shoes, and all hoses.
(has the 8X.5 in disc brakes on the front) weaksause!

Rear swaybar links broken. Need to fab new ones & perches.

Has a 4spd with side shift. I got a W50 back home out of the celica and should go in fine.

    Oil change, rear end service.

A wiper arm is broken, So I guess we'll need one (chrome) or a nice pair. Needs a new windshield and gasket.

Drivers door window is off its regulator. Gotta find parts.

Oh and the exhaust is basically rusted off, Need to do that too.

Thats all the mechanical issues. Besides that it starts and runs fine. Bodyworks going to need weatherstripping/caulking/ and a little fiberglass work on the shell part. Truck part is nearly rust free.

Stay tuned for pics. Gotta make it back to Texas for my camera.

It looks just like this except with dual rear wheels...

I always thought one of those on bags with a motor swap would have been a sweet towpig for my 77, plus you have a place to crash at shows!

Getting ready for the trip back home.

I changed the oil and filter, new NGK's, fixed a fuel leak and diff fluid change.

Oh and it had a flat on one of the rears. The tire shop guy had HELL getting the outer tire off the wheel. (one wheel, two tires, two valvestems) Anyways, it had a tube in it and got a new one. 26 bucks installed.

The thing is neat as hell. Two factory longbed fueltanks, hooked up to a switch in the cab. Switch controls what tank and the fuel sender to the corrosponding tank. I see only one wierd looking fuel pump under the chassis. Lots of wires and 3 fuel hoses go to it.

    30 gallons anyone? :nana:

    Worked on it yesterday.

I also bought a AC unit thats going to be mounted in the back wall. No need to sweat at work... :nana:

Oh and the hardest part of this project, (besides the obvious lack of space), is where to put two 30 gallon tanks for the two sinks this sucker needs to have. One small hand sink and one double sink. We are thinking of cutting out the spare tire crossmember and fitting one there.

    Anyways... stay posted.

Nice score!! but is that the rear end that was "recalled"? The one where the wheel leaves the axle. Does it look like it came with it or was it added?

yep. Its the one that they had trouble with. But it is a G code, should be strong enough for what we are planning. People who grossly overload these campers, yea the axle bearings take a dump.

If I find a later axle Ill grab it, but right now, I even have a spare 77 dually axle if this one goes out.

Today I got the SR5 control panel in, and the great shape black vinyl dash pad.

    cleaned up the cluster

going to pull the rear axles out today. Need to replace the wheel seals and check the bearings.

Besides that, my brother has pulled the front bumper, sanded and painted the body rust, sanded and painted the mirrors and vents. Looks better already.
