I've read a post on another board a while back about swapping a Tacoma radiator into an earlier truck. This guy did a 2rz swap into his (I think) '83, and he said that it bolted in, just was taller than the stock radiator. Since mine has a hole in it, I'm trying to figure out what to do. If I wind up needing a new one, I'd like to get the best one I can. If anyone has a Taco and can measure the distance between the radiator bolts width and height, I can measure mine and see if they match. Seems like this would be a great swap if it worked. If nothing else, will a newer (84-95) radiator fit, or are the all the same?

OK - here's another question, same sorta subject. There are two radiator hoses attached to the block. There are 4 heater hoses, one that comes off the driver's side of the radiator, one off the back of the water pump, one from the center of the head, and one on the intake. Why 4? My truck had a water choke, are those hoses only for the water choke? If so I'll delete them, just one more thing that can leak.
to operate the heater properly you should only need the one from the firewall to the radiator. the other one from the firewall should go to the center of the head. block off the intake port, and use a blockoff plate from the driver side of a cover plate on the passenger side. They already made one for you, just get another at the yards. 75-84 should work, 85-95 probably does as well. A good tip when radiator shopping for anything, is get one for an automatic. You can use the cooler that is in it for power steering cooling if you have it. Or trans fluid if you make a way to run the lines. Better to have it and not need it for future use. And no, not a crappy aluminum one like that. More like this, with aluminum tanks and nice welds. As long as its for your motor, they won't differ much. 77yoter just got one for his hilux, and only had to redrill 2 holes to match his core support. If my research is correct, then you should be able to run a V6 1990 4runner unit. They are larger and have 2 cores vs one. One thing i notice on all those, is they dont have the port to the radiator heater hose. But 77yoter said his does. And these all seem to be from the same manufacturer, just different sellers. 4runner: ALUM (17-3/4 x 20-1/4 x 1-3/4) - 2 Rows. Pickup: ALUM (15-3/4 x 19-3/4 x 1-1/4) - 1 Rows. Corona: ALUM (14-3/4 x 20-3/4 x 1-1/4) - 1 Rows. If anyone has swapped a V6 radiator into their truck to confirm they will work, then I will do the same with an aluminum one. And do an E-fan.
I saw a pic from another truck that had that pipe going from the front cover to the opposite side of the block - and the hose attached to that. Not sure how it would fit under my exhaust, but the one from the center of the head is there, and I could just swap the plate from the driver's side to the passenger side. Then block off the intake with a plug and that would be it. Wonder if it would fit? I could probably use the tube bender on it if it gets close. There's nothing else on that side of the motor. That 4Runner radiator seems like the way to go, but I'm gonna check to see what they will charge me to fix my radiator. if it's more than that one then I might go for it.
What I meant was to block the one from the coverplate on both sides. But if their photos are totally accurate and it doesn't have a hose spot, then let it run to the cover on the passenger side. So, basically, the one from the radiator and the one from the coverplate flow away from the heater core. The one in the head feeds to it the heater core. The intake manifold just gets a plug for the hole between the runners. Its all pretty simple. You'll get it sorted out. I want one of those V6 aluminum ones in mine. Shouldn't have to worry about cooling anymore. It gets hot in the summer.
Right, but the passenger side is after the pump, and the driver's before. Was just thinking that it would preserve the correct routing, since the driver's side cover goes into the side before the pump. Yea I suppose it doesn't really matter since it wind up almost the same place! I might have scored a stock radiator for cheap, but I'm gonna plug that intake one and probably get a plate for the passenger side. Depends on what I go with. I almost wanna get something new so I don't have to worry about it, but you know, $$$$. speaking of which man.... pics?
The 3.0L V6 radiator fit nicely in my 92 22re 2wd. I think only 1 or 2 nuts had to be welded onto the stock support for it to work. I am going to be attempting to fit my 2rz radiator in my 92 2wd next. I will be using a tacoma support. The rad is a lot taller than stock. And it is wider also. I think I am going to have to do some redesigning of the front frame section. Tacomas don't have the huge crossmember thing at the front of the frame like 89-95s do. It will be hard if I decide to do a body drop too, as the front frame has to drop for that too.
Oh, haha. Yeah, I'll try to snap one tomorrow. Its been sitting in the glovebox since I got it. And thanks for the info on the V6 unit. I'll double check the numbers vs the 78 core support, but I should be able to make that work.
ive been trying to stay out of this one but get the all aluminum rad i got mine for 130 shipped to my door and that is one hell of a deal ill put a pic of it up when i get to work
Grabbed a stock radiator for $30 locally, gonna try that out. Should work fine... but we'll see when I bolt it all together. Those aluminum radiators are lookin' better, though.
