as the title states.... anybody done this? is it possible? i have a rod bearing going out and wanting to just slap a new one in to get me by while i build my spare motor...... any input? thanks
You will have to drop the bolt in cross member. Then unbolt the motor mounts. Place a jack under the trans bell housing and then jack the engine up til it stops. This is to allow the oil pump pickup to clear.
if the bolt in cross member is removed what is there under there left to clear that requires the engine being lifted?
ya know..... i should have thought of that before asking such a dumb question..... thank you for the answer though.... went ahead and dropped the steering linkage since after raising the engine as much as i could the pan would not clear the sway bar .....oh well... only two nuts... now i know, thank you to those that answered
live and learn. now u know how. i ran into the same issue. but i just wanted to reseal the pan. bearings were fine. i learned the hard way. even just to remove the sway bar is a b!tch
ya. but it keeps gettign worse lol.... one of the headbolts broke off while tryign to remove the head. luckily some is still stickign out of the block ....now if i can just get the head to come off.. (yes i removed the bolt in the front cover) ....so today after work i get to wrestle with that in the driveway with snow and 18* weather.....pretty stoked about that
I just pulled my oil pan with the engine and 1 ton sway bar still in place. I dropped the crossmember under the pan and unbolted the idler arm from the frame. That allowed more than enough room to get the pan off without issue.
im not sure if unbolting engine is easier or harder, but ive always just unbolted the steering linkage from the frame on the passenger side. its like 3-4 bolts and it just swings down outta the way. if youve got a steering damper, unbolt one side of that too. oh and chock yer front tires if you do it that way.
---@ the stuck head bolt.... how i removed it (from a friends truck) -used vice grip pliers, lock it down super tight, lace it up with some PB blaster, and with a hammer, gently to moderately tap on the top of the broken bolt while trying to work the bolt back and forth. came loose after a few minutes of trying. then when it finally broke loose, i backed it out slowly (still with vice grips) tight and loose and lots more PB blaster.
thanks Taco, I forgot to update that I got the bolt out (with PB blaster and time and a ol'school stud extractor) and the truck is back together and running great
I did mine without taking all those parts out. Just remove all the oil pan bolts and take extra time cleaning and putting it back together. It was a PIA, but I did it.
