Before I start on this thing I have a couple questions for you guys.

The manual says you have to pull the engine and trans together. Back in the day we would pull our chevy's engines without the trans. Is this not the case with these toyotas?

Pulling an engine, for the most part, is pretty universal, But are there any Major do's and dont's for a toyota 4x4 with a 22re?

I'm planning on starting this week if nothing else comes up.

    Thanks

Dang man, you guys could pull chevy engines without the engine. Thats some mad skills.

Anywho, unbolt the trans and the motor will come out. I think theres like 12 bolts going around.

depending on what your doing and how good you are either pull the radiator or take the hood off for clearance purposes. Def can dismount the trans to pull engine. I love Chevys so easy to pull apart I miss my impala

Pull the transmission out the bottom, then take off the hood, out with the radiator, and pull the motor out the top.

Ive pulled the motor and trans together one time in a yota. PITA, dont do it.

I was hopin to leave the trans where it is, just brace it up in place.
As far as the hood, I thought that was standard procedure lol.
What I meant by my question was, for example, I just finished a restoration on a Shelby Charger And without the advice of guys that had been there done that with those I would still be trying to figure out certain things with it.

I figured I would go at it from that angle, just wanted to make sure there wasn't any unheardof strap, bolt, etc. (that kind of thing).
I'm looking to do the bottom end freshen up, have the head checked, and if it checks out I need to save the funds on that for now. Might revisit that next summer.

    Thanks guys

Yah these things are dirt cheap to rebuild with machining and the rebuild kit I think its wasnt more than $400 for parts/labor I did have a mechanic assemble it and put it back in cause I was pressed for time and my job allows me ZERO free time but if its something you are doing yourseld then yah its really cheap and really easy

seriously, Ive taken my motor in and out dozen times or more, I always pull the tranny with the motor..I can do mine by myself motor and trans in under 1 and a half hours.. yes its easier to pull just the motor butttt, there are 2 bolts on the top of the trans 17mm I believe that are very hard to get at. And putting the motor back in and getting it to line up with the tranny is obnoxious and impossible by yourself. Only things I can suggest, sometimes I take the head off the motor first, with the intake still on it.. just to make room, then those 2 bolts are a easy to get to...

double check to have all wires disconnected, radiator taken out is a mus if you wanna re use it..2 motor mounts, and make sure to mark your fuel lines, which goes where.. saves a lot of hassle in trying to start it up with the them backwards ! not much to it, like I said I can have my motor running, out, then back in, running again in probably 5 or 6 hours by myself...

That sounds reassuring, if thats the case then, this wont be too painful. Lol
Since its a 4x4 I think I will just pull the engine, being the transfer case is involved.
I will try to remember to take pics and I'll post up my endeaver.

I'm gonna try to bypass dealing with the trans. and transfer case.... those two bolts you refer to will prob be less trouble.

Yeah, on a 4x4 it's definitely easier to leave the transmission bolted in place in the truck. It's pretty easy to pull the motor by itself.

Hey V8 titan thats why they make swivle sockets and Japanese people to take those bolts off LOL. Yah 4x4 has a bit more clearance def dont want to mess with tranny and transfer case if your not working on those parts. Very simple straight forward keep us posted also if you need parts or something Im sure one of us gots them laying around for cheaper than going to the autozone

pull the engine and tranny together.... just use an engine load leveler to make the job easier.
