problem with my auto transmission in my 93...

    1993 Pickup Ext Cab.
    whenever i first start the truck and start driving it wont shift out of first. i have to drop it down from drive to 1st gear. then back up to second then to drive. but after i do it it's fine. anything i can do without taking it to a shop? i've never worked on a transmission before. anyone know whats going on?
