lately ive been doing a lot of side work, im unemployed and thats why i havent been here so much.

trying to keep it to 2xr powered yota's if possible. most of the time its nothing cool enuff to share but this time its different.

now im doing a bit of work to a mostly perfect, almost exclusively dealer maitained 82 4x4. the thing is beautiful, all the factory hardware is there, with clean threads, most all previous work was done right with care. this truck is a true joy to work on for a toyota nut.

original diagnosis was a blown headgasket and a bad timing chain guide, with a possible bad timing cover. i was mostly right.... mostly.

any ways heres the pics you waded through the text to see.

    hard to believe the mileage
    [IMG]

    turns out i was right
    [IMG]

im a lil worried by the pitting and carbon scoring on the cylinder walls.

yep im calling this a junk block
    [IMG]

if you notice the raised bits on the head gasket, thats radiator stop leak, DO NOT EVER USE IT PERIOD.

oh hey the head is F'd too

so the reason i posted this in the build up section is i hope to convince the owner to throw money at the motor the way i want to. i havent talked to him yet since i found out the motor isnt repairable.

this is a classic example of a simple problem turned bad.

radiator was leaking, and someone added stop leak, still lost fluid and overheated. new HG on a warped head with a still leaking radiator. and somebody updated the timing chain to a single when this truck came with a dual from the factory. the dual timing chain should still be in there, and good enuff to use on the next motor to live there.

    updates as they come

I say the block is still good... Hot bathe that baby and bore .40 over...

Yea that head is toast! Brand new/rebuilt heads on ebay 3 bills max. I'd estimate no more than 9 bills just for parts and machining. You can tack on your labor rate after... I'll do it for say 2g's total for parts and labor. Well, worth it to keep that precious thing alive! Good luck! :waytogo:

btw- that timing set is probably from the '82-1/2 - '84 model... Any other single chain will be too short...

totally rebuildable these days .. I done lots like that . and also just to let you know /82 HAD a single chain from the factory .. /81 was the last year for the duel row chain from the factory , it was used on 81's till production 8108 . in /82 they went to the single row chain ... it is TOTALY convertable on these engines up to /84 untill Toyota went to the "laser" block

my old /84 with duel row ...

Sorry about the job, head gasket and head. That happened to my 88 22RE and that drained my bank account (crappy job, I'd be making more if I was laid off:lol:), but you are saving cash by doing it yourself, right? Were you running on less cylinders? Mine ran on three before I had it diagnosed and fixed.

Anyway, these blocks are indestructable, my cousin claimed that his friend with one had a whole the size of a golf ball in the head and it still ran.

THAT'S FIBERGLASS?! Probably wouldn't be good for hauling something though, right? That's the main reason I will never "bob" the bed like burnzya likes, I still carry things once in a while. I try to leave the tailgate off as often as possible to reduce weight, but I make it a point to have it on hand if needed. However I could use some Line X on my bed, maybe after I get the light bar I want mounted in it...

    some clairifications:

    this is not my truck...yet.

the owner has decided to let me put in a 20r with a 32/36 to fix the truck quick and cheap. he says that later this summer he will sell the truck to me, if i cant afford it im gonna advertise it for him. this truck is too nice to turn into something like mine

if i could afford it id rock one of those glass beds. but at the same time, i really like dents.

interesting tidbit about the years, ive had stock 83's with a dual chain.

Sorry, I got confused... I know this might be a stupid question, but what happened to your truck, I see that it had rolled obviously, but how?

So the fiberglass beds, are they heavily reinforced, because I don't know how many tuners I have seen with fiberglass bumpers, where they tap a cone and the whole thing breaks and pops off. Is it somewhat lighter than stock Toyota beds?

Sorry once again to break away from the thread's purpose. Truck's a beauty.

Okay, I saw that video before actually, I thought it was just something you found online. I get it now. Smart using the hi-lift jack to make the cab accessable, I never would have thought of that. Well, good luck dude.
