Ive been debating this thought in my head since i got my little truck and its come to ask some people that might have ps on there older toyota's. So ok ive been told a few things that really turn me away from doing ps on my truck. Ive been told that ps on these trucks doesn't help that much at very low speeds and dead stops, that its basically like having no power steering, and ive also been told that it makes the steering at highway speeds very "floaty". Now i do kinda believe the floaty steering because i have had a old rig with ps (78 mercery zepher) and it very much felt that way, i hope the first isn't true cause I'm tired of have absolutely no luxury things in this truck. I think adding ps would help in getting the i should sell it though out of my head. Any way any body out there that as ps, whats it like does it suck like the few people that have told me not to do it.
I've removed it from a couple of my vehicles. Most recently my 85 BMW. Dead stop and very slow speeds bout the only time I even remotly notice it gone, and road feel when cruising is beautiful.
that person is a crack smoker. the PS systems are pretty good. 1 finger parallel parking good. a good box will have NO slop in it. the floaty steering is the manual box, its supposed to have play my only complaint, is kinda my fault. i swapped to ps on my celica(79), and there is no steering damper. so on the freeway its kinda F1 car touchy, i would like a lil less assist at high speeds, but i havent figured it out. but then my celica wasnt meant to have PS, so there is no damper availible. the slightly newer celica (80-81) dont have a damper either and suffer from the same problem. but the trucks do have a damper. i say go for it, i did and couldnt be happier. got bad shoulders so manual really isnt a option for me on a DD. shopping list for the junkyard: (all parts from a PS donor ) box w/ pitman arm steering column (look for SR5's for a tilt) pump w/ bracket and hardware lines and reservoir w/cooler (since your there instead of the stock yota cooler get a oil cooler with fins and a lil bigger then the oem unit, fluid will last longer) ps damper (shock thingy attached to the steering) you will need to stick to the same gen of truck as yours for parts, the bolt pattern for the box is different gen to gen. but everything else will bolt on to unused holes already on your truck.
im pretty sure you do have to swap columns because i think they are a different length but you can put your key switch in it if your year has it there
yep. different legnth. but on the positive side, if you find a SR5 as a donor you can get a tilt column too.
