    take points, set in garbage.
There are magnetic pickups you can put in the distro to replace the points are are much much more reliable

Were? And so should I replace every other component with what got or return them and get new ones? What would work the best?

well i need some info from ya first. what year is your truck? does it have a 20R or an 8R. I see you are in AZ so there is no smog laws for ya right? what parts do you have now?

if ya got a 20R i would just swap out the distributor for a 22R distributor and pick up an ignitor and coil for a 22r as well. Then run the power that would normally power your coil to the positive on the ignitor and viola, modern 22r ignition for your truck.

I have a 20r...what would be the benefits of a 22r distributor? is it a easy swap? Can I get them new at auto zone or should I pull one and get new parts for it? How should it be set/what about the vacuum advance? Stock or upgrade? And could anyone suggest their favorite plugs and wires...

ngk wires are a great cheapo upgrade, i also run ngk plugs on my rig. you will need the distro, coil and ignitor for this to work. The distro is a direct swap, have you set timing before? also if you go to the junkyard to get a distro bring a vacuume pump and test both the vacuume advances, most of the time the farthest in one breaks. for the rest of it set it at 8 btdc ( if i remember right im drunk ) with the vacuume stuff disconnected and you should be fine.
