Hello All, I have an 89 regular cab, newly purchased. It is carb'ed with a 4 spd. It is bone stock other than some mileage maker tires I added...that was an ugly deal I made that I hope is awesome on mpgs... Here's my question: exhaust broke right after muffler, rest of system is a little oxidized looking so figured I would replace it from manifold back. Can anyone suggest a good high flow system that will not make the thing NASCAR loud? I want the performance and breathability of the engine, but I don't wanna sound like I am racing every time I pull off from a stoplight...a little grumble is fine, but I want to be able to hear myself think...any help is appreciated.
Damn that truck is clean. Nice find. I would have a shop build you a 2 1/4 setup with a MagnaFlow muffler. I have the same setup and it is a nice tone without drone.
Thanks man, I think it was a good find too. I am going to look at magna flow muffler but I want to install the system myself. I was wondering about finding a bolt on kit. I did this for my 95 civic and figured there would be a similar bolt together kit that includes manifold back to exit tip - preferably with a cat converter blank. I am looking to maximize airflow and unleash HP and efficiency.
I made a full 2 1/4 system to go behind a Thorley TriY header. I used a straight through glass pack muffler and it's a little too loud for me, especially long highway drives with the trailer. I went to a muffler shop and bought some pre bent mandrel elbows, high flow cat, muffler, hangers, and a 10' straight pipe for $190 I think. If you or someone has a welder that's the best way to go. That said, I've actually been thinking of trying the stock manifold with custom downpipe and remake the entire system with 2". I think 2 1/4 might be overkill for this engine without having major motor work.
I built my own on my 3rz... it has 'redback' branded extractors that run to a single 2 1/2 pipe under the cab to a stainless (not that you can tell anymore) muffler off a 2008 model v8 holden commodore (I think you guys call em a pontiac) I got some 2 1/2 inch mild steel pipe from the local exhaust joint, and got the guy to put 2 simple bends in them, and cut the rest with a 175mm angle grinder into sections to make the bends and welded it all up!! runs twins out of the muffler, topped it off with dual hotdog resonators and added little down/dump tips!! it sounds deep as but is pleasantly quiet unless I rev it past 3500rpm! didnt need twins but it looked cool! at the time I was broke, and for what it cost me in mig gas and hours it would have been cheaper to get it all done at the exhaust shop! but, it was fun!
I'd skip the high priced bolt on exhausts. Bring in your own muffler to a shop and they should be able to bend and install a complete system for under $150. I would suggest adding atleast one good resonator to tone it down if noise is concerned. In my experience, chambered performance mufflers can get raspy. Good resonator(s) with a straight through muffler is what i like.
