When I build my new frame I wanna get it painted or powder coated. It'll be my daily driver an wanna know the pros an cons of each. I know if I paint it an it gets chipped I could touch it up but if powder coated I wouldn't be able to. Lemme know what you guys think

 

Personally, I would powdercoat it. I've found powdercoating to be quite tough & long-lasting.

I'm going to get my chassis chemical dipped & zinc plated and then I'll speak to my powdercoater to see if they can coat galvanised stuff without any further preparation.

 

I was thinkin powder coat aswell but say you do get a chip an water gets underneath it you'd never notice it rusting. If I paint it. I'll use POR15 from the front to behind the cab then paint the back half HOK Orion silver

 

once you get a chip in powercoat moisture gets under it and the powder coating starts to peel off in huge sheets sometimes. Ive heard that there are new methods and chemicals i guess that combat that problem. I would talk to your powder coater and see what he says.

 

Ya thts one thing I was worried about spending hundreds of dollars on powder coat an then one chip could ruin it.

 

Prep is 90% the work.
Spraying (paint or powder) is 10% the work.

 

deff not the case in powder coating, it is way more labor intense then you could imagine.

 

of course, spend 100% on the 90% prepping and 100% on the 10% painting.

 

I think I'm just gonna end up painting it would be way easier to touch up once it's put back together. I was reading up on it an if you get a chip an mositure gets behind it you would almost never know until it peels from rust. An it will be my daily nd layin it out would worry me. Also I could probably paint it cheaper since I could do it myself

 

not to mention how expensive a whole frame would be, you have to find someone with a big enough oven...

 

My buddy told me he had a friend that got his done for 4-600$ he couldn't remember. But that's alot more than what Id spent in paint an renting a booth for a day.

 

just throwing this out there, but why not get it rhino lined? or what ever brand you prefer....

 

Toyota Hino trucks are all powdercoated.....


look at them, they're huge! but my friend told me they might've used large warehouses with hot lamps to do so....

 

Once i have my frame all ready (z'd, all brackets welded, modified, etc) i'm taking my frame to have it powder coated. I had it estimated to costs about 4-500 bucks, but i have to load it up and take it about 2 hours to new orleans, since that is the closest shop with an oven big enough for the whole frame. My friend does powder coating and it looks way better than paint, and more durable for sure. I'm planning to get mine chem & zinc dipped, then need to decide on powdercoat or paint.

 

Only thing tht worries me about powder coat is laying it out an smackin the frame hard on the ground an the powder coat chips. I'd have no way of touchin it up without takin the cab an motor an everything apart. But if I use POR15 on the frame under the cab I could touch it up an paint the back half with some HOK

 

I know old thread but I will throw in my 2 cents. I've done the powder coated frame thing before, and I will do it again. You need to find a good shop to do it right. Its all in prep. The place that did mine blasts it, does an acid dip, then washes it and bakes it pre coating. The got the inside of my frame even, I was very impressed. And it was not that much, the frame alone was probably $500-600. I got a lot more done than that. I will be doing it again soon for the Mitsu frame. But, the point I want to get to, I drug my powder coated frame a few times (dont really like dragging but felt like trying), and I actually threw almost no sparks. I think a few from my rockers. But I went home and checked out my frame. It had scratches on the bottom, but no powdercoat got removed. I was able to polish it back and looked like it never hit the ground. Any truck I am serious about from that point on will have a powdercoated frame.

I have seen poor powder coat jobs too, where I could flake the coating off with my finger nail.

 

Well i still am dead set on powder coating mine. Just got my calipers done about two weeks ago. I know people tend to say this then go back on their word, but i really don't plan on dragging my truck. I'm putting a lot of time and effort into it, i'm not going to abuse it but more appreciate it.

Dragging looks way cool,but if I want to see sparks,I'll fire up the grinder!
Too much time & money invested!
