Truck misfires and smokes going down the road, this is what the spark plugs look like. PCV valve has been replaced within the last 2k miles and seems to be functioning correctly.

Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this?

It's been progressively getting worse. Stuttering worse and worse each time I drive it, smoking worse and worse each time I drive it.

It leaks oil but it generally gets about half a quart low after 2 weeks or so?

Smokes more after it's warmed up and no it's not running hot.

hmm.... i would have to think the valve seals are goin as far as the oil smoke...... the stuttering though i would toss in some new plugs. they are pretty plugged up with deposits and take it from there. they will also provide a clean slate for a reading as to whats going on in there.

take a timing light when warmed up, and attach the plug wire lead into each individual wire, aim the light onto the hood and look for the misfire. connect the plug wire lead into number 2, then 3, and 4 and inspect each plug to see witch cylinders misfire.

whats the condition on the motor? mileage and so on....

These plugs were new about 4 - 6 months ago when I got the truck out of the field. I cleaned them up as best as I could when I pulled them off and it's not misfiring anymore.

Truck has 170,000 miles on it. I believe the motor has been swapped out for another 22re though. I'm not sure what the miles are on the motor if it has been.

Is it possible that it's bad rings and it's causing air to get past the piston causing excess pressure forcing oil out the pcv valve and it's getting recirculated into the intake? I wouldn't think valve seals would cause oil to get inside there would it?

Honestly, that buildup is normal from lots of miles. bad valve seals will cause your smoke issue. Especially if it was sitting. Seals dry up from lack of lubrication over time. You can remove the intake and have it hot tanked to remove all the gunk. The plugs should be fine cleaned up. That was likely your misfire main issue. Id go over your cap and rotor too. Check your plugs again after a few more miles on it and see if you get any more deposits or buildup.

Needs a rebuild. Valve seals may get by for a while, but if your going to pull the head, might as well put new guides and seals in it.

Could be rings too. When the heads off, drop the pan, take out the rods and pistons. Re hone it with new rings, and she'll be as good as new.

my old cressidas 5MGE plugs looked like that...mainly bad valve stem seals. You don't need to pull the head to do them. I've used compressed air (pain in the butt) and the rope method to hold the valves in place while changing them.

Yes, bad rings could cause it too.
