I have an 89 standard cab pickup. It has the 22R in it and i believe I have a leaking rear main. My brother owned this truck before me and recently replaced the rear main in it. In the process he said he noticed a few nicks on the crankshaft. Would this cause premature seal failure? Maybe did he do something wrong when he replaced it? He said the leak actually got worse after he put the new seal in. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
No, the nicks would not affect the main seal around it. Sounds to me like you need to replace the seal. Proper tightening patterns and alignment are essential with this union. If the housing itself was compromised it would cause a leak, but, Im betting that the seal wasn't installed correctly, no biggie, even " professionals " mess that up every now and then, replace the seal and you should be good to go.
fixed leak i did some further investigation and found a missing half moon gasket on the rear of the valve cover. the rear main is fine. now just to take care of that pesky leak on the front of the motor.
Great, in finding the leak, its amazing the oil that can come outta that lil seal, I lil spot and itsa gusher.
