    Good day all!

If this were a domestic, the answer would be easy...but I am diving into Toyotas now, and want to make sure that I am not learning everything the hard way. I have a 94 XC with a 22RE. I have one hell of an exhaust leak, and plan on changing the manifold out with a header (speaking of which, does anyone have experience with OBX headers?). In Alberta, there is no smog laws, and I'd like to remove the cat altogether. Has anyone done this before, and with what results?

All of the other vehicles I have ever done this to, the CEL wouldn't come on because they only had pre cat sensors. The thing I am uncertain about is if the o2 sensors are the kind that are sensitive to heat. If a certain heat is required in order to obtain a proper reading, I'll put in a high flow cat. I'd just prefer to keep the costs down.

    Thanks in advance!
    Kent

No one has ever removed the cat from one of these trucks and has experience with it, be it good or bad?

Please note, I am not speaking from personal experience. I had a family friend do this to his late 80's early 90's Toyota pickup. From what I know, even with a new aftermarket exhaust system he still tapped into the system to install the 02 Sensor.

It sends info to the ECU which will make adjustments to things such as your fuel delivery.

It probably can be deleted from the system, but it would entail more than just removing the sensor itself.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

If only you were carbureted ... all you'd need is a saw of some sort , pipe and a welder or band clamps......

I agree!! I have a ton more experience with carbs, but I'm learning the ins and outs of EFI. I'm getting the header soon, and am wanting to remove the cat altogether. And would prefer to run with no check engine lights.

Every thing I've read says no.
I have headers,02 & flow through cat & very modified engine, runs the way it should! Plenty of powder, good mileage if not into the throttle,& fun to drive!!

Wait, what are you asking ??

The pre -cat sensor should be the one that affects fuel delivery. All my experience is on Mitsu twin turbo'd V6's. So I may be off a little.

The pre cat sensor is the main one, the secondary is just around to make sure you have not messed w/ the cat. Part of the obd thing. On Mitsu's when we delete or gut the cat we just run a resister and delete the secondary. I can dig up a link when I get home.

But why are you messing w/ the o2 sensor. It only affects the engine on cruise and part throttle, open loop, when you go w.o.t. it should ignore the o2 and go off the tables in the comp, closed loop. That is why narrow band o2's are useless.

And what year did Toyota switch to obd2 ?? If you have a 94, you should still be obd1

    22RE's are OBD1, then the Taco's are OBD2

I thought there was only 1 02 sensor? The one right before the cat. Is there another one up by the headers? I plan to swap out to aftermarket headers too.

Perhaps my wording on the first post wasn't very clear, and for that I apologize. My question isn't about removing the o2 sensor, but the cat. How the o2 sensor came into question, is that some of the non-heated o2 sensors need the heat created by the cat to obtain a proper reading. If it is a heated o2, then in theory, removing the cat should make no difference.

I am curious if anyone has removed the cat altogether and how the truck responded (positively, poorly, check engine light or none, etc).

    Sorry for any confusion!

if you have TWO o2 sensors (california i believe), most likely you dont wanna touch that... smog wise and all

as for myself, i had just the regular one o2 sensor, my cat is gutted.

I hope you didn't just throw out the guts.....you know some of that stuff is platinum, right? There's been quite a rash of cat theft in the area (new toyota lots particularly), and they've all mysteriously ended up at the local recycler...he's helped catch them.

I have an 88 22re 4x4 xc and I removed the cat and got a side exit exhaust made up(before rearend). I liked the sound and I think I even gained some power. I can`t remember if the engine light was on but it ran fine. I`ve drove Toyotas with the engine light on and I usually just ignore it.
