I've been looking for a 2wd extracab for a while. I found a 92 on craigslist last Sunday. The lady who owned it took it to a shop last summer for a tune up. The timing chain had eaten through the timing cover so she ended up with a new HG, milled head, timing cover, timing chain and more to the tune of $2400,00. I took it for a test drive and bought it out from under some other guy. I picked it up on Wednesday. 1992 2wd excab, 22RE, auto, AC with 134,000 miles and a new top end. My plan is to make it a nice driver and do it up "Protouring" style. I had a 90 single cab that had the same suspension and it handled like a slot car. I don't plan to lower it because it will see some time on dirt roads and I'm too old to be driving a "slammed mini". I am also 6'4" and it sits pretty low already. I put some cheap 205/75/14"s on it when I picked it up Wednesday. I also installed the Husky floorliners out of the 4wd excab I'm selling. Today I picked up some Infinity 6 1/2" speakers and made some panels to install them in the rear cubbys. I haven't figured out what head unit and dash speakers I want yet. Parts on order are: addco Antisway bars KYB gasadjust shocks Exact fit seat cover for the 60/40 seat a new grille from Ebay That should keep me busy for a couple of weeks. Future plans include: 17 or 18" wheels and tires, not sure which yet Magnaflow high flow cat, muffler and 2 1/4" exhaust 4runner or some other nice buckets Fix the bed near the left tailight, the only real body damage More to come... Welcome to the site man!! That sure is one clean truck you got!!! Keep us posted with pics when you get all the parts on! Cant wait to see how it turns out!
Yes, welcome to TM! That is a great lookin truck. Might I suggest Alpine for a head unit. I have 'em in my truck and in my wife's car. They are 3 years old and no problems. Have fun here and if you have any questions someone here has an answer.
Thanks guys! I got a little bit more done today. I actually got Alpine 6 1/2 inch speakers not Infinity, I made some cubby panels to mount them. The door panels had some cheesy speakers that were not even connected and a nice tear in the passenger side. So I made some kick panels to cover them. I also ordered a Pioneer headunit and some 4' speakes for the dash this morning. More to come... Robb
Rear speakers look good. Nice job! You can fit 6 1/2's in the doors with spacers. Thats what I did, mainly cause I have no rear speakers.
great work!!! I'll be finding my way to install 6x9's in the rear soon. How did you wire the rear speakers? that truck looks exactly like mine.... well, maybe 10 years ago
God, that truck is CLEAN! That interior and exterior almost looked mint. Did you clean the engine or did you buy it that way? I'm liking the way you did the rear speakers and the kick panel ones in the door look great! Can't wait to see what else your going to do!
I haven't wired them yet but I will run the wires inside the side panels and under the door sills. Robb
I bought it pretty much as it sits. I keep second guessing myself for buying it. Like any 17 year old truck it has some issues. I actually like the way it drives with the auto trans but it has a shudder when you put it in reverse. The fluid is full, red and doesn't smell burnt. I plan to change the fluid and filter and see if that helps. I will keep taking pics as the new parts start going on. You guys make me feel welcome even though I a going in a different direction. One of the reasons I drive a truck is to support my other hobby. These are some of my other toys, I am a professional bike mechanic and I like to ride them. Robb
You got nothing to worry about. We're a family, we like variety. As long you don't have ricer and things like that done to teh truck and you have good taste, we won't bash on you I like where you are going with the Pro-Touring, what's included in it? I know my truck sits pretty high.... 1" drop up front but thats it. Everyone else in my local forum has something lower than my truck
I did some more work on the truck today. I replaced the broken grille with on from Ebay. Before After I also got some new seat covers from Ebay. Before After I also have a new carpet kit that I ordered for my 4wd and never installed. When my stereo parts come I will pull out the interior and install it. More to come Robb
looks great so far! I actually installed my audio a night ago to run the wire, basically you remove that bottom panel near door frame (4 philip screws) Use flathead to open that panel with the cubby's. Then basically run the wire under the carpet from the headunit, to your speakers! I was surprised it was easy to do. I had my local forum help me out. We are still working on my cubby mount speakers. I'm only on my two 4" speakers... good luck!
