'86 4Runner, 4x4, 22REC, (RN61LV-MSEK), 5spd man, all stock. I just tore down the engine & re-assembled it with new rings, bearings, gaskets, and a bunch of smog & vacuum hoses. Now, when I try to start it, it will get a very rough idle for about 1-3 seconds and then die. Smells rich at the exhaust. Timing is correct, all wiring & hoses are installed correctly. Also, I noticed that the 'check engine' & 'charge' lights have a faint glow even after the ignition is turned off & the key is removed. Got the rig in '05 from my son & drove it for about 9 months and then non-op'ed it in 12/05 because it wouldn't pass CA smog due to low compression in #1 cyl. [Turns out he put a rebuilt engine in but didn't follow up with the warranty instructions], Sooo....with only 3500 miles on this engine, it's been sitting on the side of the driveway for 4 years and has been started only 3 times [started right up - I put a double dose of Sta-Bil in it when I parked it & kept the battery charged up]. Any ideas or similar experiences? Thanks in advance, -kenny-
Welcome to the site Has the fuel pump been replaced before? My 88 4x4 had some of those symptoms when that gave out.
Hey Sandshark, Some ignorant newbie lied in his first post when he said "all wiring & hoses are installed correctly". Turns out he missed a grounding wire wrapped up in the wiring harness under the air intake chamber. I'll have to have a talk with that guy. Started right up & kept running. The problem, however, is that it still has low compression in the #1 cylinder(75 compared to 150 in the others). Sooo..... I left it at the mechanics place this evening & he will work on it in the morning. I suspect valve guide leakage.
who did all of this for you? did you do it yourself, or you had someone do it for you. lol dont be shame to say. lol
uhhh... Well, 22r, there's three of us working on this project and I'm not exactly sure who did what but it could have been me, myself, or I. My son installed the rebuilt engine in 2004, I got it in 2005 and had to non-op it in Dec '05 when it wouldn't pass smog. I took it to a mechanic a couple of days ago to get some official diagnostics run and he suggested that he thought it was the valves/head at #1 causing the problem. I pulled the head again last night and dropped it off at the machine shop on my way to work today. It had a bad #1 intake valve and has been re-done. I'm heading to pick it up now before the afternoon shift starts. I plan to have it assembled and compression tested by Sunday. If it checks out, I'll get it smogged and register it on Monday. Who-hoo, 4 years later (minus about 3 weeks). Will drop more details in after I talk to the re-build guy and get put back together. Later, all... -Kenny-
progress Shop had to replace all the intakes & one exhaust valve. They also put new guides in, ground the seats and got it done by 4pm. Was busy today but plan to get it back together by Sunday night.
