My name is Ryan. Been reading the fourms for a long while now, got some great info from here. Thought that I owe it back to register.

I have a early 1972 model Toyota Hilux that i have had for about 5 years now. The truck is a Nor Cal truck from concord originaly. Bought it as an impuls buy off craigs list from a guy in Alameda. I live in Pittsburg one town over from concord.

Bought the truck with an 18rc not running per the old owner that it would not idle and had a large active iol leak when running. In short all that was wrong was that the cam plug in the back of the head was sitting on the bellhousing, allowing (1) a huge oil leak, (2) low engine vacume and poor idle.

Id say the best $500 spent on a fixer, let alone a vintage toyota. About a year after buying the truck the jack shaft on the 18rc timing gear that drives the distributor decided to frag. For the life of me for months i searched for a replacement part/engine. fed up i decided to perform an engine swap.

I picked up a 1984 celica early style analog fuel injeciton. 22re w58 trans.
$500 craigslist find. running but not registered for 2 years. drove the car home from richmond and striped it.

Currently the truck has the 22re and w58 stuffed in the small engine bay. everything sofar had been trial and error. 4/72-78 parts are all bolt on to an extent due to same frame designs. but to to large body style differences ebery part still requires modifications.

As of right now i have a factory trans crossmember sectioned and moved back to accomidate the w58. I also have made custom engine mounts to the block to use the fatory rubber mounts.
everything fits extreamly tight but fits.
I also used the factory celica fuel pump and adapted it to the original fuel tank.

All my wireing has been pulled form the celica harness wire by wire and i made a custom wire loom for the efi.

I really want a header but im in a bind. the factory manifold fits and the down tube litarly fits between the (3) steering box bolts tight I was thinking on geting a 75 up header. but since the body style was not ment for the engine im afraid it will not fit.

Thats where im at sofar with my truck. I know some of this belongs in the pre 75 fourm but i figured this info still apply as an introduction.

thanks for all your time. hope to post more and provide pics here in th enear future.

    Ryan

Welcome, Ryan! Thanks for sharing your Hilux story with us. It's really cool seeing some of the "oldies" still running. Post up some pictures of your interior.

BTW, I'm in the South Bay.
