ok. so i finally found me a truck. i had posted a wanted ad on here a while back looking for one cheap and local but never could find anything in my price range. found a 1986 toyota reg cab 4wd short bed with a 22re at a local car auction wednesday night for $1000.00.

it idles really high and when i cut the truck off it popped loudly like it backfired. just wanted to get some advice on what to check on for the idle issue and backfiring.

please dont say use the search feature, start flaming me, etc. i am not a noob. i just have school and work and very little time to do the research when chances are, i will not find the exact answer i am looking for. i am a regular member on celicasupra.com and have 3 celica supras and a celica gts that i just got. i am more familiar with the 5mge engines but want to learn more about the 22re.

if you can give me some ideas that would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,

    -Danny

Well the 22RE is a 2.4L. Some key points you need to look at with a purchased 22RE are: the timing chain-sometimes it can get loose and wear into its casing
cleanliness-most all 22res have high miles. Cleaning it up can help a lot
if new parts are added it cleans it up too.
wiring-I've had wiring problems on all my older pickups. It would be a
good idea to go over the wiring and check for any damage.

As for the backfiring, I am not a mechanic. But I would guess that the ignition has a problem somewhere.

    sounds like a vacum leak

also if its backfire through the intake thats ignition
if its throught the exhaust it valves

so with that said if you dont find a vacum leak I'd start to look at checking adjustment of your valves

thats not the gosple only cause I cant dignose it over the internet:ROFL:

ok. well i did some more inspecting on it and it is a 22r. not a 22re. my mistake. i wasnt paying attention to it when it was at the auction. lol.

i took some pictures and will be posting them up as soon as i can get them uploaded.

thanks for the advice. it will be a good starting point.

Here are the pics. If anyone has any suggestions for how I should redo parts of the truck I am definitely open to ideas. The interior is about shot. Need suggestions on seats that work, paint schemes, interior colors, etc. I have no idea what direction I want to take with the truck at the moment.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Danny

the hight idle is probly from the previous owner advancing the timing on the truck. advancing the timing helps with preformance just alittle.. i would check the timing with a timing light, also if you can get a tach, that way you know just hot high of an idle its doing. Question though, is it always at a high idle or just when u start up?

ok. i will check the timing when i get a chance to look into it. it always idles high.

the truck was purchased from a local dealership new in 1986 with only 6 miles on it. that guy had it for probably close to 20 years. then it got sold to someone else and theyre probably the ones that messed everything up on it. then it was traded in to a local used car lot and sold at a car auction where i got it.

a lot of receipts and paperwork was in the glove box. lol.

little wire brushing and black paint will clean up the engine room nicely. brake booster/master, radiator/shroud, air cleaner, ect. looks like a solid start.

looks like a good base for a project vehicle. get the essentials done first. make sure it runs right...... after that, get the interior some attention. although it looks rough it shouldnt take much at all to get it cozy in there... some insulation, carpet, a few replacement panels and you'll be good :waytogo:
