Hi everyone. I'm actually a 4x4 guy (I own a '91 shortbed regular cab) but I'm looking for info on Xtra-cab Longbed trucks. They seem to be rare, but they are out there-most of the time when I see pictures on the web its from this page or another mini-truck forum. Can anyone point me in the direction of an FAQ or other resource that can tell me what years they were offered? I'm looking for one for a potential project, but it seems that all I find are either regular cab longbeds or xtra-cab short beds. I found this link on Toyota's website to old photos but the only place the Xtra-cab longbed shows up is in 5th gen trucks, specifically 1987:

Thanks-based on what I found there, plus threads on here, it looks like the only year for the xtra cab long bed might have been 1987? There are only three threads on here with xtra cab long beds and they are all '87s. Can someone confirm this?

 

Hey what's up dude, I've seen you over on YotaTech (I go by highonpottery there). I was looking at 2wd Toyota pickups for the past 6 months on CL and I actually came across one 3rd gen xcab longbed, I want to say it was a 1991. I'd never seen one before and always thought that if you wanted that combo, it was in a 2nd gen pickup only. I'd say the combo is very rare as most longbeds I've seen are on single cab trucks and never on a 4wd unless someone customized it...which is another option - buy xcab and stretch frame for longbed.

 

Glad to know there's some crossover between the 2WD and 4WD crowd. I'm planning a build that most here would probably consider sacrilege-I think it would be cool to take an Xtra Cab Longbed, put a 4WD drivetrain under it, and do a "walk through," which is basically cutting out the entire back wall of the cab so that its open to the bed, then welding the bed (with plenty of reinforcement) to the cab, and cleaning up the seams on the sides so that it looks factory.

Basically the goal is to create a long wheelbase 1st gen style 4Runner by putting a bench seat in the forward part of the bed and leaving the rest of the bed open for gear. I figure you'd end up with about 19 more inches of bed space than a regular 1st gen Runner, plus it would be a really cool custom job. A guy on Pirate did a variation on this by turning an Xtra cab shortbed into a 4Runner:

 

i've seen that rig on Pirate and I wanna say there's a few others similar. there's a whole thread of walk-through cabs for inspiration too if you haven't found it.

what you're wanting to build sounds pretty cool but dang that sounds like a long wheelbase! I know my xcab already has to do "austin powers turns" compared to 4runners and single cabs on my local trails. forget about u-turns, lol
