Replacing my water pump, Thermostat and Valve Cover Gasket. Can someone give me the torque values for the 3 parts mentioned? I'm planning on replacing these Tomorrow morning. I thought it would be easy to find on the FSM but can't find it. Thanks in advance, Al
just looked in both chilton and haynes manuals i have and i couldnt fidn anything torque spec on any. the way i do them is ... valve cover - start with left front tighten till is just starts to tighten down, go to right rear, same, then right front, the left rear. tighten like 1/2 turn until tight. 2 me its a judgement call when u think they are tight enough, they dont need to be cranked down really tight, it can lead to warping the valve cover. just take your time. No gasket sealant on this. thermostat - nothing special, just tighten the bolts down evenly, not alot of pressure (torque on the bolts, these bolts will snap easily as i have found out. no gasket sealant, just fyi. water pump - u want to go from the center out, just do a star pattern, but tighten then little by little, that way you get as even as possible, when they feel snug you should be good. The smaller bolts can snap easily, just a heads up. Use sealant on this gasket, both the time cover side and water pump side. I know this may not make alot of sense, its hard to type how to do something like this, well atleast to me it does. Good luck.
there is no torque value for the water pump or thermostat, the valve cover is 8-11ft-lb. this is in the toyota service manual. hope this helps.
From Toyota Pickup,4Runner Service Manual Gasoline ,Diesel & Turbo Diesel 4&6 cylinder models 1978 through 1988 water pump---- 10-15 NM (7.5-11 FT LB) cylinder head cover---- 10-15 NM (7.5-11 FT LB) thermostat---- 15-18 NM (11-13 FT LB) Use anti seize on all bolt threads. There is also a list of torque values by bolt size ,you can Google it.
Thanks for the quick responses guys I'm about to enter the garage and start wrenchin. Thanks again, Al
