Truck failed emissions (I live in Oregon). Hydrocarbon was twice what it should be 591, should be 220. The air pump is siezed up and there is no belt on it. Would that probably cause it to fail? I know it could be other things, cat, spark, timing.... but since the air pump does not operate, thats my first guess. Heres what I need help with: If thats probably what is causing it... How do I fix it? Cheap? I dont know a whole lot, although if I knew where to get it and what to get, making sure I dont get another broken one from a scrap yard, all of that, Im sure I could replace it on my own... two hoses, a few mounts and a belt... which I already have. Please help me Im new and I have to get this fixed by Jan.
Well Hydrocarbons simply put is unburnt fuel comming out the tail pipe. The easiest way to start fixing that is a tune up. This way you make sure your spark is gonna burn as much of the gas mixture as possible. The airpump is a emissions thing so i would suggest getting it repaired. Scrapyard would be cheapest. Im not sure what one of those runs new. Id start there and takeit for a restest. And before it is put on the dyno take it for a good long hard haul down the raod. Get it good and hot! That will sometimes make a huge difference! Air fuel mixtures burn better hot!
Junk yard had 2 smog pumps, i took them both. Also picked up a replacement wiper motor (mine wont park, just stops where it was when i turn them off). So now I will try replacing the smog pump to see if emmisions go down. IS there any way to be sure Ive got a functioning air pump other than just seeing if the pulley spins?
Basically undo the supply line that leads to your exhaust. Very carefully with the engine runnig feel to see that air is being pumped out. If it is then it is working. Now there are other valves in the system to control air flow.... as far as i know it should pump some air all the time. But it MAY need to have the Rpm's brought up. Or engine under load... would require 2 ppl to do. I do not know those air injection systems that well so you may want to research it a bit just to get a understanding of it fully. And make sure im leading you in the right direction.... but checking for air flow is the most obvious thing that comes to mind.
new pump is installed... engine idles better, runs better, shifts better... almost needs a carb adjustment now because its running a little low, but I think overall adding the air pump back to the equation improved things a whole lot. I went to put it through emissions... they are closed today!! oh well, so I cant say for sure if it will pass but hopefully it will when I go in this week. Will be sure to post my results. Thanks for the advice S.V.S.
