I was wondering if anyone had any idea of what could be wrong.

So after driving for any amount of time, sometimes 20 minutes other times just like 2 minutes, it just starts lurching like its running out of gas then just stops. It wont run no matter how much gas you try to give it and at no matter what rpm its at.

It usually starts back up and runs for a minute or less then does it all over again and dies, but I did get it run for about 20 minutes to get home after it happened a couple times.

It has a full tank of gas and I have already replaced the fuel pump with a new one, along with a new strainer.

Any information and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Could my problem be a ground? Like to the pump/tank because it doesn't always die, some times it just bogs then keeps going for a second the dies..

I need to figure this out quick

What's the brand of this pump ..it's not uncommon at all for them to crap out or get hot and act up ..china built ones are notorious for it

Its an airtex brand pump but I'm quite positive it isn't the pump.. I forgot to mention my truck starting acting like this so I replaced the pump, but nothing changed

O okay we'll I'd check the power and grounds to the pump that as well can cause a pump to pull to many amps and get hot . Is there a secondary fuel filter in the system

There is a filter on the pump and a filter in the engine bay.. I'll check to see how full of crap it is, probably just replace it anyways.. I'll also check all plugs and connections. Thanks for the ideas!!

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge see if its getting the right amount. Your maf could also be bad.

MAF? As in mass air flow sensor? I didn't know I had one on a carbureted motor...

I figured.. Do you know if the pump gets run off the oil pressure switch or if its constantly powered by the fuel pump relay?

I would think it gets its power on from the fuel pump relay once the ignition is turned it proably sends the signal to the relay to activate the pump not very familiar with the early models wiring schematics

I don't know how common it is, but found it ODD that i had shorts in my wiring to the "idle fuel cut solenoid" on both my '81 and '86...

Its the little solenoid on the side of the carburetor that cuts the fuel off when you turn the key to the "off" position, so the engine doesn't "diesel" or keep running.

Both trucks it would happen intermittently and they would bog and cut out while driving.... Took a while to finally figure out that the ground was at fault on the '81. Then 4 years later my '86 started doing the same thing and that was the first thing i checked, and wallah! Same deal...

    Its a possibility??

Try unhooking the idle cut solenoid If you have one I think it's in the same connector as the choke wire large green round plug .. Let the truck get warm before u do it if it has trouble cranking without the choke .. Drive it and see if it acts up

I have a water choke.. So unplug it and if it still acts up it isn't it? Just double checking to make sure I'm understanding right

So I unplugged what I think is the idle cut off solenoid, and it died... But otherwise it would not die! This thing angers me soo much..

U ever get around to checking that other fuel filter .. And old trucks will cause headaches ......patients the problem will show itself . I'd focus more on checking your wires and grounds and fuel delivery remove that second fuel filter or bypass it with a hose
