Ok I thought it would be a good idea to put this up since I haven't this topic on TM. Post up any pics or at least links of lowered utes with trays. Can be any make, model, year as long it has a tray. Prefer vehicles that have been lowered but others are ok. 'Utes with trays' are stuff like this: Biased towards holden
I had no idea what you were even talking about until I saw the pictures. Is that some sort of Australian thing? Flatbed conversions as a fashion statement are new to me.
Those things are all over AU. My inlaws (from Sydney) say "we don't have trucks" then I get there and these things are all over the place.
Well it must just be an aussie thing.... Over here we call them trays but where you guys are call them flatbed, anyone know why? I have been told it is because over the years no one has imported them so they weren't avalible... I could be wrong... but it seems reasnable to me. I will see if I can change the title from tray to flat bed. Cheers
Trays is local slang over there I guess? It's all good; it's just that the only ones I see are beat up work trucks. I guess it's up to you to post up pictures of the nice ones.
Being used to flatbeds us aussies love what you guys have. We pay a pretty penny for them too buying a stock rear end for my 80 is setting me back 6000, for a decent one and a spare. But I am up for the challenge of getting some more pics Some are from build ups others are just random. Cheers
After finding some more pics I found something you guys will enjoy http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=18266
mmmm....longbeds but really, I never thought of that. US trucks were often shipped without beds, but they were built and installed in california. You just never had them period over there? Or just not very common, and worth a lot of money?
Just very rare as most older cars became infamous 'bush bashers' or shooting rigs... Most now are either hand built or are imports. Of course there are a few exeptions because thats a given.
Some more pics of aussie utes with flatbeds. I try and get the lowest size from wallpapers but I dont have he time to crawl through build ups to find decent cars.... so for now just wallpapers.
Errrm I would say a guess a 74/75 as It looks simmiliar to a mates GTS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Kingswood#HQ This link will give you some basic info. I really but cannot drive them since most now have V8s.
i think it was australia that started the PU/CC classification pick up/cab chassis as to get around certain import taxes the factory "bed" on many imports was more expensive to have fitted after arrival to australia than a locally made "tray". it is a real touchy subject ute aka utility VS truck in australia and the debate can get some steamed up and as a definition a "ute" is car based, engine and transmission but it is the car style independent coil front suspension, where a "truck" has front leaf springs and a greater payload than one metric tonne 1,000kg. the chevy LUV or light utility vehicle was a failed attempt to introduce the term as a smaller option to the mini versions of larger US made trucks such as example f100 compared to a f650. strangely enough the term SUV sport utility vehicle stuck in the US and yet they still get called trucks as do vans. without going on some rant but the world should respect us australians and the original concept of the coupe utility, as we brought to the world a utility vehicle more suitable for day to day life than the larger ridged trucks the US had to offer. utes have smoother rides, optional features of the top of the range production car and are just straylain. personally i think it is as much of an insult to call a utility vehicle a truck as it is to put a chev badge on a holden, mini trucks are a myth in australia because they are either registered under the class of car/utility or the more expensive light commercial vehicle "truck" classification and don't you just LUV that my RK101 2 ton imperial payload front beam axle "truck not ute"
