Just thought I'd ask before buying something. Are these alternators any good? This is the one I planned on getting:

    Load Boss

I will be running a 4awg wire as recommended from battery to this alternator. Does anyone have any pro's or con's for this brand?

I did a small write up in my build thread of the HO alternator I built. Being in the factory case, I really doubt it'll put out 170 amps of current. I suppose it depends on how they measured it, as there are no industry standards.

I was told that the most I could ever expect to get using the stock case is 130 amps, still a good jump over stock.

The place I ordered all my parts from was out west, had everything in stock, and it cost me around $90 or $100. That's new windings, brushes, rectifiers, and voltage regulator.... everything. And rebuilding it is simple.

My guess is, that it's all this ebay seller is doing, and then claiming 170 amps.

I went with the marlin crawler gm mount kit, and a 120 amp factory alternator. The kits like $20, and you can get the alternator at a junk yard for cheap.

That's how I do it. I run the stock alternator till it pukes then I build my own GM mount and slap on some cheap high amperage goodness.

Interesting, I can build my own mounts but what year/model of GM alternator should I look for? Plus what would the wiring look like?

There are hundreds of writeups on wiring but its stone simple. Pick most any gm alternator from about 73-88 and you'll get mini 68 amp.

I decided to go with a Denso Part 210-0406 off of a Jaguar. It's 120amps and pretty much pnp. Supposedly fits in there snugly and with a little tweaking of the pulley mount it's adjustable.

I'll probably end up getting the kit that Liteneon mentioned and work on that as a backup too.
