I have a leak somewhere from the trans and I can't locate it. It appears to be coming from the top somewhere around the shifter. Is this a common place or is there some place else to look? At first I thought it may be the output shaft but there is fluid closer to the front of the engine but not on the bellhousing.

It is clear so my guess is gear oil. I will know more today when I get under there and clean everything up- drive around the block and see if it starts to leak agian.

dip your finger in it and smell it.

then pull the dipstick and smell that, if it smells the same...

If your shifter guide is broken it will pull off the top boot off of the shifter housing , its an easy fix, pull the boot up push down and twist on the shifter retainer, pull the shifter out, stick your finger inside to make sure there are no chunks left in there, through in the new guide, put a new knuckle cover, and reverse the process, the reason the boot pulls off its because if the guide is broken the shifter will stroke to far and pop the boot comes off. The guide and knuckle cover are dealer items.
