Weird question, maybe, but here goes....

Does anyone know what kind of paint was used from the factory, for trucks 83' on down? Lacquer, Enamel, something else maybe?

    Thanks.

i don't know what chemical components are in the factory paint job, but it was base coat clear coat on my 83's.. and a lot of them have been re-painted in single stage. just curious or need to know for re-painting?

As it stands I can't really afford a new paint job, but at the same time I actually prefer the oxidized paint. It's the areas of surface rust that concerns me.

Before it got worse I decided to sand and primer. Then I found a company that will color match what my oxidized paint looks like and put it in a rattle who's spray pattern is similar to that of a spray gun, as opposed to your typical store bought cans. Just sent them my gas tank cover since it was small and cheap to ship.

They give you a choice as to what kind of paint they use, hence my initial question. But I've since discovered that it is in fact an enamel. I have already ordered my paint and once I get it I will start up a seperate thread with pics sharing in the results.

I don't recommend nason single stage paint. my 66 mustang was painted with it and it started to fade in a year. but i'm sure the 2 stage would hold up much better.

Toyota vehicles from the early 90's and older were painted single stage, only the metallics, and dark colors were givin a clear coat.
