I figured I'd have to lose the tc wheels, maybe find some cheap 15" and rough the paint up

Alrighty. Though that picture doesnt appear to be very rusty, most of what I see in that pic can be done with some sandpaper. Sand down the body (lightly, in non-uniform directions, not too heavy a grit) to get the dull finish, focusing more of your dulling efforts on the panels that would get the most sun/rain weathering (any surface facing up).

If you want dents, add those with a hammer or let a teenager drive it.

A true ratrod look would be rusty, not just here and there, but rusty from where the body meets the frame to the window sill (or farther up), with an added rust anywhere water can pool. Done right, a two-tone of rust and paint is hot.

    +1 on adding 4x4 fenders.

That red truck is sweet, my rolled yellow 76 is going that route also, I think they look great perfect but something about it just looks so good with lots of honest wear and tear!

Drift pickup style for the win. But in my opinion, don't use sand paper, use scotch brite pads and plenty of water to scrub the paint. Use soap and degreaser as necessary. 15 inch mesh wheels, fender mirrors and boso pipes!
