There just isn't a easy search on yota trans id. I found a local guy with this trans claims its from a celica. Iam not 100% on what it is.

Nobody's answered yet? Well I seem to be in a cynical mood tonight, so I'll give it a go.

Look at the Wikipedia page. Toyota W transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What year of Celica did it come out of? For each transmission, Wikipedia generally says what cars and years it was used in.

The W55, W56, and W58 all look very similar from the outside. That picture probably won't give enough info for even an expert to know which one it is, and I'm no expert. I just RTFM. If you have a way to hand drive the input and attach a pointer to the output, put it in first, turn it around three and a half times, and see what happens. If the pointer is about where it started it's a W55. If it didn't quite make it, it's a W56. If it goes a bit beyond, it's a W58. Maybe. The article says the 82-85 Celica used the W57 transmission. If that's a W57, use your pointers and shift it into 5th. A W58 will go 78% of a turn on the output for one full turn on the input. A W57 will go 86% of an output turn for one full input turn.

If I had to hand drive the input, I'd try finding an old deep well socket that goes around the shaft. I'd grease the shaft well, then fill the socket with hot glue and push it on before it sets. Once set, you can turn the shaft with a ratchet. I'd try it on a clutch centering tool first though, to make sure the grease keeps the glue from sticking to the shaft.

    Good luck.

At the time I posted that I had not even seen the trans in person. Found it on craigslist was just trying to figure out what it was from pictures only.

I did the formula on turning the main shaft while counting the output. Iam 98% sure it's a w58. Idk what year celica it came from though. Either way 55 or 58 I managed to drive away with it and a brand new clutch for $70.

    Good score!

I wish there was an easy way to id our transmissions. I was told my truck has a celica trans when I bought it...

I still don't know what one...

The only for sure visual I know is the 50 and 52 had a steel center portion. If its all aluminum it's a 55/56/58. The only real diff is the specific gearing used in each. I've often wondered if its worth swapping in a 58 for the taller OD.

If it came from one of the celicas, it won't be a W55 unless it's Australian. The 5-speed trans for the 82-86 Celicas are the W57 if it happened to have a 21r motor, or a w58. Hope your bellhousing on your current engine is for Toyota W55 and above. The bell on the trans won't fit.

Now, one thing to be aware of. If it's from the 81 and before Celicas with R-series engines, it could be a w50. The first gear is almost exactly the same as a w58, and the w57, and the 2nd and 3rd gears are pretty close. The first and final gear are the ones to check.

I have a w52 from a 79 celica in mine. Didn't notice much gearing change from the w50.
