Is it the gear ratio or my transmission?

Ok my truck is an 82 2wd 5 speed 22r with 168k on the odometer. Unfortunately when im on the highwayit feels as if the engine is forcing itself at 65mph. At 65mph my rpm gauge is at 3k rpm's and if i go try to hit 70mph itll climb up to 3200rpm's. Ive seen other toyota trucks this same year pass me at 75-80mph and they dont sound as if they are struggling at that speed like my truck does. So my question is, Is it the gear ratio or my transmission thats keeping me from reaching a confortable higher speed? Even some trucks with a 4 speed tranny sem to be running better.

Anyone? Ok....for the 80-83 guys, at what rpm's is your truck at when going 65mph on the highway?

    In 5th gear.

    Maybe 23-2400 rpm. (3.42 R&P {4spd truck}) with a W58.

But your problem is a lack of one thing...

    Horsepowa!

Today me and 22R All Motor were gently cruising thru Houston traffic at 110 MPH.:runaway:

I doubt it can be a lack of horsepower. If i floor it, which i have, it can go all the way up to 80-85. But at that point it sounds like its about to hit the rpm limit. I just want to be riding comfortable at70-75 if possible. RAFFAELI thats what i mean man lol you have a 4spd and how the heck can you be riding it comfortably at that speed without hearing the engine in high RPM's?? So did you change your diff gear ratios?

nothing with helping the motor clean up. Yeah, 60mph the trucks will purr. go faster and it'll get much louder.

Back when mine was stock I thought the same thing...

It seemed like it was screaming to death at 70 MPH. But I got my tach and the dang thing wasnt spinning 3K rpms. It just sounded faster than it was actually going.

So my advice is to get a tach. And see what it actually is spinning. Stock motors sound like they are gunna rip apart at 75-80. So you need to see.

Keep in mind the national speed limit was 55mph in 1982 :lol:So why do you need to go faster...:verdict_in:

And once you know what rpms your turning, you can figure what transmission to use. W58's always a good decision.

And thanks for the complement :waytogo:

I know what you mean. I have an '80 with a 5-speed and stock 4:10's in the back. it spins like 3000rpm at 60. Above that it seems to make more noise, but still can go faster. I have to keep it from hitting 70 sometimes. I have a set of 3:42's I'm going to swap in which should reduce that to 2400-2500 range for 60, which means I'll float along at 2700 or so at 65. That's about as fast as I'd be willing to push it anyway, keeps me out of trouble too!

but yea even though the torque peak is higher than that, it sounds to me like it's gonna blow above 3500rpm!! :D

I guess it's been a while since I drove a stock 22R. All the best sounds from my motor come from 3000rpm and up. Now the wanting to blow up sound doesn't come back until around 7000rpm or so :p

See thats what i was trying to figure out. Your 3.42's bring your rpm's down going at that same speed than with the 4.10. So im going to look for some lower gear ratio's. Im sure i have the 4.10's as well since your case sounds exactly like mine. Off of what year truck did you get those ratios from? If i want to change my gears out, i can just change the pumpkin out or do i have to change the axle? Rookie azz question but i dont know much about doing these swaps to these trucks :doah:

I found a guy who had a set. make sure you have the same axle when you get the gears, check your build tag in the engine compartment. You probably have an F code (7.5") rear and 29 code (4:10). Make sure it's the right bolt pattern and flange on the pinion for the driveshaft. There is a larger one and it won't fit, think they take larger 14mm bolts too. Ours should have 12mm bolts.

Just before you do a swap, check your ratio by lifting the rear end up and spinning one wheel, count how many times the driveshaft goes around for each turn of the wheel.

I have 4:11 with a 4 speed and at 60-70 it is winding but according to my tach I'm at 3000-3200. So I dont worry. Maybe your 3rd members oil is low or need to be changed. I frequently hit 5000 rpm in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears and my rear end wants more. My light is set at 5000. I usually cruise it but when i get itchy the power is there.
