Hrm, i think i had something samilar but it wasn't as you describe but i guess gas/oil was leaking to my exhaust which gave a little scent of gas, i think they told me it was a valve or something, but yours could be much more serious maybe..?

You could also have an injector(s) that aren't completely closing, dribbling extra fuel. The computer can adjust for it under acceleration/cruise, but not at idle.

pull your injectors and spray 'em with carb cleaner, also include spraying the cold start injector. give the VAFM a look.. sticky is a problem.

The diagnostics port is under the hood on the passenger side i believe. Should be sticking straight up. Least on my 3vze it was. Not sure about the 22re.

I would check the MAF and O2 Sensor. A faulty O2 Sensor will make a truck or car run rich.

I had the same prob out of my 22re, turns out it was the temp sensor for the cold start injector. Part stores wanted upwards of $88 for a new sensor. i just disconne ted the wiring for that injector. that solved that problem.
