Ok, so i poked around some of the old threads we have here and i got some basic info of what im looking for

Im looking to amp up the Ignition system in the truck to make better use of the added air/fuel im getting. Ive seen everyone upgrade their ignition coil up to the MSD Blaster coil and also some better wires. With that, id like to know what else you guys are running in pair with this? what coil, what wires, what plugs, distributor, and timing set did you guys have? what brand parts did you guys use? any suggestions as to what to look for and what to stay away from........

also something i found was that with the MSD coil, you need to use a "tach adaptor"? is this absolutely necessary? for that matter..... what does it do?

    thanks :waytogo:

The tach adapter is used when you are using the factory tach. I believe the voltage needs to be regulated somehow to get the right reading. I have never had to use one since I've always had an aftermarket tach. I would recommend the MSD 6AL w/ Blaster 3 Coil along with their wires. I haven't heard anything bad about Accel or Crane ignitions but I have always used MSD.

I run a Crane CD ignition system with an MSD Tach adapter. I have tried MSD, Mallory, etc and found the Crane unit to be the most reliable. My motor pulls 285 HP with Nitrous on the Dyno and has a 6800 RPM rev. limit ignition setting (motor can go to 8500 RPM Max.) and I have never had any ignition system problems. I run 32 degrees total ignition advance with it all in at a little over 2000 RPM. I run NGK plugs and Taylor ignition wires. When I am not on the "Juice" I get about 19-20 MPG on the highway.

^^ My setup isn't quite as nuts as that, but the MSD 6AL and Blaster coil have been working good for me. I also run both my distributor and cam advanced, about 15 degrees at idle plus 5 degrees on the cam.

Flame thrower coil. 15 degrees BTDC with no vaccum hoses connected. Good wires on Nippondenso plugs. .045 gap.

Its simple, cheap and doesnt have a problem being driven by the factory ignitor.

MSD blaster 2 coil, 6A that replaced factory ingnitor you dont need it, MSD super conductor 8.5 wires, E3 Plugs, Indexing washers. Only thing I can think I could use is a MSD distributer but I dont spin that high yet.:waytogo:

I run the Mallory Unilite mechanical advance distributor, Mallory promaster coil, inline spike filter, 8mm wires on both mine, no complaints at all, did have a hyfire 6A box on for a short time but died after only about 3 months for no apparent reason, so took it off and never went back, never ran any better or any worse (until it died then didn't run at all :))and fuel mileage never changed with or without it.

Go to the MSD WEB site and look for the instructions for your model ignition control and download it.

ok so im trying to decide what to do with my current distributor (stock) should i hard set the timing on my truck to around 20* btdc? or should i reconnect my vaccume advance and run 12*-15* btdc @ idle??

not sure wich would be better at the moment? what do you guys think?

with my vacuum line unhooked, i have my motor set at about 16* btdc. That is with the stock compression on super. But it ran the same on normal gas, that gas just didn't like to hold up to the higher revs. I have a blaster 2 coil, and some 8/8.5 wires. Forgot which ones, but it was the largest set summit had available that were precut to length. I usually make my own lengths, but knew I wouldn't have much time to swap them coming up. The truck runs real good. I'd like to run a 6A box since I haven't ever tried one on a toyota.

You'll be surprised at the difference when you get it revved out. It will seem like it wants to do it even more so.

    my setup....
    -msd off road box
    -msd blaster 3 coil
    -8.5 msd wires
-ngk iridium spark plugs (changed every oil change)
-stock replacement rotor (changed every oil change)
-stock replacement cap (changed every oil change)
    -and toystory808 advance my timing

over all this **** does damage it has a better response, i can stomp the throttle with no lag in all gears. im thinking of adding the "msd 2step" (vtec?) but dont know how it really works i think you put the rpm chip for when you want the msd to kick in at it's prime then put in another chip so you don't over rev. msd never did me wrong.

I gots no truck, for now
Right now i got all stocker stuff, running only at 8 degrees advance, with no vaccume hooked up. Runs good, but now that im 100% my motor isnt going to blow up or over heat im going to start messing with it. Doing my motor swap I was worried something would go wrong and leave me stranded, but since nothing has happened yet its time to mess with the truck. Have you guys been getting all your MSD stuff from summit or is there a cheaper place to get your components from?

^^ I got all my stuff from Summit. Not much of a selection locally anyway for me.

The MSD unit doesn't "kick in"; it's always active. The 2-step is just a selectable rev limit normally used for launch control. This way you can have one rev limit for coming off the line (and launch full throttle) and a different rev limit for shifting.
