I am starting to look for a bed for my 89 shortbed 2wd. I only went to one wrecking yard so far. The guy told me that they go quick for $6-800 depending on the quality. This was more than I was expecting to have to pay for them. Plus he didn't have any right now. Is this the going rate? Any ideas of where I might be able to find a bed in northern CA? My bed is just trashed and until I find another one my truck is going to be looking rough.

Wait and look for a truck with a blown motor or something like that to pop up near you.

$6-800...damn!!! Hell you might pay $300 at the most for a bed here in SC & it would be in damn good shape. If it were me this what Id do...start looking on Ebay, CXraigslist & in your local paper for Toyota trucks your body style that have been wrecked or have blown engines. Im sure youll find something pretty cheap & if you do then you can part out what you dont need & scrap the rest afterwards! Ive done this several times & always came out on top with parts & cash.:)

I'm with smcToy, Craigslist man! I've found a few things down here in San Diego for my budget build. If you don't see anything there, Hand Solo's route is a good one too. For 6-800 bucks you might find a whole truck that you could swap out a bunch of parts from and sell off what you don't need to make your money back. In the end you would've got the parts needed and made some extra cash to fund something else for your build.

Well, FL is a couple thousand miles away, being in Northern CA. I am going to try to find something fairly local, but if I found a good deal that wasn't tooo far away (like probably anywhere in CA) I'd be willing to travel for it. I knew $6-800 was crazy. It's true, a whole truck with a blown motor would cost about this much... I don't know. Maybe he just expected me to haggle with him.

Wow, thanks guys! Somehow I managed to miss the last couple of replies here until just now. Nice CL searching! Those could both be good deals. I have had some decent leads so far searching locally. I told a friend about the guy trying to sell beds for $6-800 and he said he knew where there was whole parts trucks in the 89-95 body style for $500 (he says there are at least a couple of them). He has a garage with a lift in it so I am trying to convince him to buy them all and part them out with me. He wouldn't tell me who has the trucks. Apparently he wants to keep his source to himself. He wants some drivetrain parts and I am primarily looking for body parts so hopefully we should be able to at least collaborate on chopping up and parting out one truck to get the parts we both need. I'm thinking dismantle all of them and take the parts to Canada in a box truck and sell 'em. Just kidding about the Canada part. Selling on CL is probably more realistic. I also saw a local plumbing truck driving around with a flatbed and inquired about the stock bed and it seems like there is some potential there as the guy has a whole fleet of trucks. I didn't get to talk to the owner of the business but the guy who I talked to said he might even be down to do it for trade (I gave him my card for my welding business for the guy to get a hold of me). I'll keep you guys posted how it turns out with the plumbing company and the mystery source. Hopefully I should have some parts here soon one way or another. Thanks a lot for all the help.

I was also wondering, that bed that might have been from a '93 was from a 4x4, is there a difference in the sheet metal on a 4x4 bed of that era? I have heard yes and no. I am planning to stick with 2x front fenders unless some damn nice 4x ones present themselves for cheap, so if the bed is more flared out that might look a little weird.

No problem. My lead fell through. It's an '88 bed.

Nope. All trucks with a USA manufacture bed (some Canadian trucks may not) have the same flare.

Hey, that's alright. Thanks for checking anyway. I am starting to think it's going to be easier than I had thought to find a bed anyway. That's really cool about the 4x4 bed being the same too. 4x4 trucks are pretty common around here. That should greatly increase my odds of finding one.

If I end up parting out any trucks I will be sure and post about it, and I will try to keep the pricing as fair as possible. I haven't talked to my friend again yet to see if he followed up on it at all. I'll keep you posted.
