how to tell if you have an 8" or a 7.5" diff

    Is there a way to tell from the outside of the axle if you have an 8" diff or a 7.5? im looking at a couple diff here in SD and im not 100% which one I have.

    Also if they are interchangeable in the housings that would make life easier too..thanks everyone

    edit: and my axle was swapped so i dont know any info about what truck the axle came out of

    93 reg. cab, 95 reg. cab
    when your looking at the 8" housing the two most top bolts are at the same level, on the 7.5 there is only 1 bolt centered at the top.

    1976,1979,and also YES a 1973 HILUX
    I LOOK AT THE DRAIN PLUGS.WHEN LOOKIN FROM REAR OF THE TRUCK THE DRAIN PUG'S ON THE LEFT IS AN 8"R THE ONE THATS ON THE RIGHT IS A 7.5"R ONTHE 2WD'S 4WD'S ARE ALL WAS AN 8" ON THE REARS.THE FRONT IFS GREARS "RING AND PINION" CAN ALSO BE USED ON THE 7.5" 3RD MEMBER CARRIERS.:waytogo:
